Humane Society International India (HSI India) organized and facilitated a workshop on the 'Future of Target Animal Batch Safety Test (TABST) and Laboratory Animal Batch Safety Test (LABST) in the Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) Monographs'. The workshop hosted key Indian regulators from the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), industry representatives from the Indian Federation of Animal Health Companies (INFAH), Asian Animal Health Association (AAHA), and international experts representing the European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines (EDQM), the International Cooperation on Harmonization of Technical Requirements for Registration of Veterinary Medicinal Products (VICH), and multinational veterinary products manufacturers. The workshop was organized to encourage a bidirectional flow of information and to discuss the deletion of TABST and LABST from the veterinary vaccine monographs in the IP.

As large-scale outdoor production cannot be done in complete containment, cultures are (more) open for bacteria, which may affect the productivity and stability of the algae production process. We investigated the bacterial diversity in two indoor reactors and four pilot-scale outdoor reactors for the production of Nannochloropsis sp. CCAP211/78 spanning four months of operation from July to October.

Microalgae could provide a sustainable alternative to fish oil as a source for the omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). However, growing microalgae on a large-scale is still more cost-intensive than fish oil production, and outdoor productivities vary greatly with reactor type, geographic location, climate conditions and microalgae species or even strains. The diatom has been intensively investigated for its potential in large-scale production, due to its robustness and comparatively high growth rates and EPA content.
