Multimodal prehabilitation (Fit4Surgery) in high-impact surgery to enhance surgical outcomes: Study protocol of F4S PREHAB, a single center stepped wedge trial.

Background: High-impact surgery imposes a significant physiological and functional burden and is associated with substantial postoperative morbidity. Multimodal prehabilitation has demonstrated a reduction in postoperative complications and enhanced functional recovery, mainly in abdominal cancer surgery. Common preoperative risk factors shared among patients undergoing high-impact surgery, extending beyond abdominal cancer surgery procedures, suggest the relevance of multimodal prehabilitation to a broader patient population.

A Capability Approach to worker dignity under Algorithmic Management.

This paper proposes a conceptual framework to study and evaluate the impact of 'Algorithmic Management' (AM) on worker dignity. While the literature on AM addresses many concerns that relate to the dignity of workers, a shared understanding of what worker dignity means, and a framework to study it, in the context of software algorithms at work is lacking. We advance a conceptual framework based on a Capability Approach (CA) as a route to understanding worker dignity under AM.

Long-term effects of perioperative briefing and debriefing on team climate: A mixed-method evaluation study.

Introduction: To evaluate the long-term (5 years) effects of perioperative briefing and debriefing on team climate. We explored the barriers and facilitators of the performance of perioperative briefing and debriefing to explain its effects on team climate and to make recommendations for further improvement of surgical safety tools.

Methods: A mixed-method evaluation study was carried out amongst surgical staff at a tertiary care university hospital with 593-bed capacity in the Netherlands.

Spillage of bacterial products during colon surgery increases the risk of liver metastases development in a rat colon carcinoma model.

Surgical resection of the primary tumor provides the best chance of cure for patients with colorectal carcinoma (CRC). However, bacterial translocation during intestinal surgery has been correlated with poor long-term oncological outcome. Therefore, we investigated the influence of bacterial contamination during colon surgery on CRC liver metastases development.

Intracorporeal versus extracorporeal anastomosis in right hemicolectomy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy for colon cancer is associated with substantial morbidity despite the introduction of enhanced recovery protocols and laparoscopic surgery. Laparoscopic right hemicolectomy with an intracorporeal anastomosis (IA) is less invasive than laparoscopic assisted hemicolectomy, possibly leading to further decrease in post-operative morbidity and faster recovery. The current standard technique includes an extracorporeal anastomosis with mobilization of the colon, mesenteric traction and a extraction wound located in the mid/upper abdomen with relative more post-operative morbidity compared to extraction wounds located in the lower abdomen.

Design of a box trainer for objective assessment of technical skills in single-port surgery.

Objective: Laparoscopic single-port (SP) surgery uses only a single entry point for all instruments. The approach of SP has been applied in multiple laparoscopic disciplines owing to its improved cosmetic result. However, in SP surgery, instrument movements are further restricted, resulting in increased instrument collisions compared with standard multiport (MP) laparoscopy.

Peritoneal metastases from small bowel cancer: Results of cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy in The Netherlands.

Introduction: Cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS + HIPEC) is currently considered the standard of care for pseudomyxoma peritonei, mesothelioma and peritoneal metastases (PM) from colorectal cancer. CRS + HIPEC has also been suggested as a potential treatment option in PM of the much rarer small bowel cancer. Therefore, the current study was undertaken to investigate the results of CRS + HIPEC in all HIPEC centers in The Netherlands.

Open knot-tying skills: resident skills assessed.

Aim: Open knot-tying and suturing skills are fundamental surgical skills, founding many alternative knot-tying techniques. It is therefore mandatory for residents to possess adequate basic open knot-tying skills. The aim of this study was to compare an objective assessment of open knot-tying skills by residents to a resident's own estimation of his or her knot-tying skills, before and after a knot-tying course.

Learning curve on the TrEndo laparoscopic simulator compared to an expert level.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine growth in trainee laparoscopic skill as recorded by the TrEndo laparoscopic simulator during a laparoscopic training course, compared to an expert level.

Methods: A prospective observational cohort study was conducted between February 1 and November 31, 2010. Trainees in laparoscopic surgery completed a basic laparoscopic suturing task on a laparoscopic box trainer at three successive assessment points during a laparoscopic training course.

Successful and safe introduction of laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery in Dutch hospitals.

Objective: To investigate the safety of laparoscopic colorectal cancer resections in a nationwide population-based study.

Background: Although laparoscopic techniques are increasingly used in colorectal cancer surgery, little is known on results outside trials. With the fast introduction of laparoscopic resection (LR), questions were raised about safety.

Voluntary autonomous simulator based training in minimally invasive surgery, residents' compliance and reflection.

Background: Knot tying and suturing skills in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) differ markedly from those in open surgery. Appropriate MIS training is mandatory before implementation into practice. The Advanced Suturing Course (ASC) is a structured simulator based training course that includes a 6-week autonomous training period at home on a traditional laparoscopic box trainer.

Validation of a new box trainer-related tracking device: the TrEndo.

Background: There is an increasing demand for structured objective ex vivo training and assessment of laparoscopic psychomotor skills prior to implementation of these skills in practice. The aim of this study was to establish the internal validity of the TrEndo, a motion-tracking device, for implementation on a laparoscopic box trainer.

Methods: Face validity and content validity were addressed through a structured questionnaire.

Introduction: The potential contribution of psychological and anatomical changes to sexual dysfunction in female patients following short-term preoperative radiotherapy (5 x 5 Gy) and total mesorectal excision (TME) is not clear. Aim. In this study we assessed female sexual dysfunction in patients who underwent radiotherapy and TME for rectal cancer.
