Electric arc filter dust (EAF dust) is a waste by-product which occurs in the production of steel. Instead of being disposed of, it can be used in cement composites for civil engineering, and for balances in washing machines. To estimate the environmental impact of the use of EAF dust in cement composites leachability tests based on diffusion were performed using water and salt water as leaching agents.

It has also been reported that it caused several cases of human deaths and illness. As no study on the effect of microcystins on human hepatocytes was done, yet, the aim of the study is to evaluate the toxicity of MCLR on primary human hepatocytes.

In vitro they strongly inhibited acetylcholinesterase. In order to evaluate the role of acetylcholinesterase inhibition in toxin lethality, and to assess other possible lethal effects, in vivo experiments were performed on male Wistar rats, and ECG, blood pressure and breathing pattern were monitored.
