A new cost-effective radiometer has been designed, built, and tested to measure direct normal solar irradiance (DNI). The proposed instrument for solar irradiance measurement is based on an optical fiber as the light beam collector, a semiconductor photodiode to measure the optical power, and a calibration algorithm to convert the optical power into solar irradiance. The proposed radiometer offers the advantage of separating the measurement point, where the optical fiber collects the solar irradiation, from the place where the optical power is measured.

Methods: We used a retrospective, face-to-face, representative survey of people aged 65 to 75 years in the city of Santiago, Chile, (n = 802). We performed a multichannel sequence analysis to reconstruct family and employment stress trajectory types at various life stages and then used logistic regression models to estimate the association of these trajectory types with CVA in old age, controlled for traditional cardiovascular risk factors.

From the detailed balance-like relation, we propose a measure, K^{*}, of a nonequilibrium steady-state (NESS) distance from equilibrium. We investigate in particular the NESS of a particle confined in a time-dependent harmonic potential of constant stiffness but with an ON-OFF state following a telegraph process. Experimental results coupled with simulations show that K^{*} increases at slow switching rates (far from equilibrium) and approaches to zero at equilibrium conditions.

Oil price showed sharp fluctuations in recent years which revived the interest in its effect on inflation. In this paper, we discuss the relationship between oil price and inflation in Spain, at national and regional levels, and making the distinction between energy and non-energy inflation. To this end, we fit econometric models to measure the effect of oil price shocks on inflation and to predict them under different scenarios.

Recent experiments show universal features of ratchet gear dynamics that are powered by different types of active baths. We investigate further for the case of a ratchet gear in a bath of self-propelling granular rods (SPRs). In this study we propose a virtual screening strategy based on the generation of a pharmacophore hypothesis, followed by an in silico evaluation of some ADME-TOX properties with the aim to apply it to the hit finding process and, specifically, to characterize new chemical entities with potential to control inflammatory processes mediated by T lymphocytes such as multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erithematosus or rheumatoid arthritis. As a result, three compounds with completely novel scaffolds were selected as final hits for future hit-to-lead optimization due to their anti-inflammatory profile. The biological results showed that the selected compounds increased the intracellular cAMP levels and inhibited cell proliferation in T lymphocytes.

Grape byproducts were subjected to an extraction process under various different experimental conditions (namely, solvent type, temperature, solvent-to-solid ratio, time contact, and raw material) in order to study the effect of these conditions on the yield of phenolic compounds and the corresponding antiradical activity of extracts. Although the order of decreasing capacity to extract soluble materials was ethanol > methanol > water, methanol was the most selective for extracting phenolic compounds. Temperature and solvent-to-solid ratio were found to have a critical role in extraction efficiency; values of 50 degrees C (between 25 and 50 degrees C) and 1:1 (between 1:1 and 5:1) maximized the antiradical activity of phenolic extracts.

The activity of phosphodiesterases (PDEs) is associated with a wide variety of diseases and an intense effort toward the development of specific PDEs inhibitors has been generated for the last years.
