Effects of Non-physician Practitioners on Emergency Medicine Physician Resident Education.

Introduction: The effects of non-physician practitioners (NPP) such as physician assistants and nurse practitioners on the education of emergency medicine (EM) residents have not previously been specifically evaluated. Emergency medicine societies have made policy statements regarding NPP presence in EM residencies without the benefit of empiric studies.

Methods: A cross-sectional, mixed methods questionnaire with strong validity evidence was distributed to current EM residents who were members of a large national society, the American Academy of Emergency Medicine Resident and Student Association (AAEM/RSA), between June 4-July 5, 2021.

Electronic cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) in a patient with testicular cancer: A case report.

Electronic cigarette, or vaping, product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) is an increasingly recognized entity with the potential for severe pulmonary toxicity. We present the case of a young man first evaluated at a tertiary care center in the United States in 2019 with newly diagnosed testicular cancer with acute respiratory failure, which was initially attributed to possible metastatic disease but eventually determined to be related to EVALI. This case highlights the clinical features of EVALI, the potential diagnostic dilemma that can arise with EVALI when occurring in the setting of malignancy and the importance of inquiring about vaping use among patients with malignancy, especially in adolescents and young adults.

An Unusual Visit from an Old Foe: Oral Presentation of Syphilis in a Teenage Patient.

The authors report an atypical case of secondary syphilis in an adolescent female presenting to a tertiary-care center with fever, weight loss, oral sores, painful inguinal lymphadenopathy, and transient macular rash. Given the lower prevalence of syphilis in adolescent females, this infection was not included on the initial differential diagnosis. The evolving presentation of syphilis over time complicates the diagnosis and management of these infections, as it did for the patient in this report.

Fatal Pediatric COVID-19 Case With Seizures and Fulminant Cerebral Edema.

The novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, can present with a wide range of neurological manifestations, in both adult and pediatric populations. We describe here the case of a previously healthy 8-year-old girl who presented with seizures, encephalopathy, and rapidly progressive, diffuse, and ultimately fatal cerebral edema in the setting of acute COVID-19 infection. CSF analysis, microbiological testing, and neuropathology yielded no evidence of infection or acute inflammation within the central nervous system.

Abuse Potential of Oral Phendimetrazine in Cocaine-dependent Individuals: Implications for Agonist-like Replacement Therapy.

Objectives: Phendimetrazine is a prodrug for the monoamine releaser phenmetrazine-a drug with known abuse potential. Preclinical studies suggest that phendimetrazine has limited abuse potential and may have promise as an agonist-like replacement therapy for cocaine dependence. This study evaluated the abuse potential of phendimetrazine in humans.
