Background: Persistent anterior knee pain and subsequent patellofemoral joint (PFJ) osteoarthritis (OA) are common symptoms after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). Quadriceps weakness and atrophy is also common after ACLR. This can be contributed by arthrogenic muscle inhibition and disuse, caused by joint swelling, pain, and inflammation after surgery.

Background: This case study describes an atypical presentation of avascular necrosis (AVN) of the first metatarsal head, which is largely unfounded in the literature.

Case Summary: A healthy 24-year-old female initially presented with pain at the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) and was diagnosed with AVN by physical examination and magnetic resonance imaging. The patient demonstrated atypically poor progress in recovery, despite being in otherwise good health and being of young age, with no history of corticosteroid or alcohol use.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate the risk of coronavirus transmission to healthcare workers during aerosol-generating procedures and assess the effectiveness of personal protective equipment (PPE) in mitigating this risk.
  • A systematic search of medical databases identified 17 studies relevant to the transmission of coronaviruses in anesthesia and critical care settings, which were used for meta-analysis.
  • Key findings indicated that certain procedures like endotracheal intubation and nebulized medication administration significantly increased the risk of transmission, while the use of N95 masks, gowns, and gloves substantially reduced the risk of healthcare workers contracting the virus.
