Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is widely studied in environmental and biogeochemical sciences, but is susceptible to chemical and biological degradation during sample transport and storage. Samples taken in remote regions, aboard ships, or in large numbers need to be preserved for later analysis without changing DOM composition. Here we compare high-resolution mass spectra of solid phase extractable DOM before and after freezing at -20 °C.

Plastic debris widely pollutes freshwaters. Abiotic and biotic degradation of plastics releases carbon-based substrates that are available for heterotrophic growth, but little is known about how these novel organic compounds influence microbial metabolism. Here we found leachate from plastic shopping bags was chemically distinct and more bioavailable than natural organic matter from 29 Scandinavian lakes.

Pollution from microplastics and anthropogenic fibres threatens lakes, but we know little about what factors predict its accumulation. Lakes may be especially contaminated because of long water retention times and proximity to pollution sources. Here, we surveyed anthropogenic microparticles, i.

Article Synopsis
  • Understanding ecological processes is crucial for addressing the impacts of climate change and human activities on lakes, which are vital for many ecosystem services.
  • Harmful cyanobacterial blooms, driven by nutrient pollution and climate-related stressors, pose significant threats to lake health and functionality.
  • The European Multi Lake Survey (EMLS), conducted in summer 2015, standardized the collection and analysis of comprehensive data from 369 lakes across Europe, promoting consistency in research and potentially serving as a model for future large-scale ecological studies.

Non-predatory mortality of zooplankton provides an abundant, yet, little studied source of high quality labile organic matter (LOM) in aquatic ecosystems. Using laboratory microcosms, we followed the decomposition of organic carbon of fresh C-labelled Daphnia carcasses by natural bacterioplankton. The experimental setup comprised blank microcosms, that is, artificial lake water without any organic matter additions (B), and microcosms either amended with natural humic matter (H), fresh Daphnia carcasses (D) or both, that is, humic matter and Daphnia carcasses (HD).

Large-scale studies are needed to identify the drivers of total mercury (THg) and monomethyl-mercury (MeHg) concentrations in aquatic ecosystems. Studies attempting to link dissolved organic matter (DOM) to levels of THg or MeHg are few and geographically constrained. Additionally, stream and river systems have been understudied as compared to lakes.

Insight into how environmental change determines the production and distribution of cyanobacterial toxins is necessary for risk assessment. Management guidelines currently focus on hepatotoxins (microcystins). Increasing attention is given to other classes, such as neurotoxins (e.
