A reinvestigation of 171 basal cell carcinomas of the head and neck treated by surgical excision revealed 23 recurrences. Recurrence rate in one group of basal cell carcinomas, situated on embryologic fusion lines, was statistically higher than in other groups of basal cell carcinomas situated on other parts of the face and on the capillitium which served as control. Histopathologic subclassification of the recurrent basal cell carcinomas revealed a higher incidence of nodular type with infiltrative margin and of the infiltrative type.

Acute epiglottitis, which is almost exclusively caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b, was studied retrospectively in children 0 to 15 years old in a defined region of southwest Sweden from 1971 through 1980; 211 patients with clinically well-documented acute epiglottitis were found. The age-specific incidence was 14/100,000/year, which was higher than the incidence of H. influenzae meningitis.

As a basis for further clinical studies on antibiotic concentrations in maxillary sinus mucosa in humans, determinations of biologically active penicillin V in the mucous membranes of the maxillary sinus and the buccal mucose as well as in tissue fluids and tissue from subcutaneously implanted tissue cages in rabbits were made. Several experimental conditions were studied, with the purpose of establishing optimal conditions with regard to tissue sampling, blood contamination, prediffusion time, etc.

A follow-up study, including clinical examination, X-ray and function tests, of 27 children with acute epiglottitis treated with tracheotomy at the ENT-Department, Mölndal Hospital during 1971-1975 has been performed. The function tests were an important part of the investigation and included measurement with the He-dilution technique, flow--volume curves and the forced oscillation technique. No child had any detectable tracheal stenosis or any other serious per- or postoperative complication.

Lesions to the blood-brain barrier have been investigated in rabbits following constant or intermittent injections of sodium metrizoate into the internal carotid artery at different injection rates. Under certain experimental conditions the lesion to the blood-brain barrier was predominantly located to the brain area supplied by the contralateral carotid artery or the vertebral arteries. It is shown by serial angiography that the application time was shorter within the vascular territory of the paradoxical lesion.
