Objective: While the majority of patients with catatonia fully respond to benzodiazepines or ECT, some have a partial or no response. Benzodiazepines may be contraindicated such as when delirium co-exists. This review discusses the utility of NMDA receptor antagonists as alternatives to benzodiazepines in the treatment of catatonia in adults.

An overview of recent studies on available treatments for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), female sexual arousal disorder (FSAD), and genitopelvic pain/penetration disorder (GPPD) is provided.
Recent Findings: Include delineation of the process of care for pre- and postmenopausal women with HSDD; release of global position statement on testosterone therapy in women; updates on efficacy and safety of vaginal estrogen for genitourinary syndrome of menopause and bremelanotide for HSDD; removal of flibanserin alcohol REMS; and development of new technology to enhance bioavailability and brain delivery of treatments.
En route to a bio-based chemical industry, the conversion of fatty acids into building blocks is of particular interest. Enzymatic routes, occurring under mild conditions and excelling by intrinsic selectivity, are particularly attractive. Here we report photoenzymatic cascade reactions to transform unsaturated fatty acids into enantiomerically pure secondary fatty alcohols.

To date, the mechanism of viral entry into NK cells remains uncertain. Here, we investigated this mechanism using human NK cells in vitro.

Therapeutic hypothermia provides incomplete neuroprotection after hypoxia-ischemia (HI)-induced brain injury in neonates. We previously showed that cortical neuron and white matter apoptosis are promoted by hypothermia and early rewarming in a piglet model of HI. The unfolded protein response (UPR) may be one of the potential mediators of this cell death.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe severity of perinatal hypoxia-ischemia and the delay in initiating therapeutic hypothermia limit the efficacy of hypothermia. After hypoxia-ischemia in neonatal piglets, the arachidonic acid metabolite 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (20-HETE) has been found to contribute to oxidative stress at 3 h of reoxygenation and to eventual neurodegeneration. We tested whether early administration of a 20-HETE synthesis inhibitor after reoxygenation augments neuroprotection with 3-hour delayed hypothermia.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe consequences of therapeutic hypothermia for neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy are poorly understood. Adverse effects from suboptimal rewarming could diminish neuroprotection from hypothermia. Therefore, we tested whether rewarming is associated with apoptosis.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAim: Improved survival after cardiac arrest has placed greater emphasis on neurologic resuscitation. The purpose of this pilot study was to evaluate the relationship between cerebrovascular autoregulation and neurologic outcomes after pediatric cardiac arrest.
Methods: Children resuscitated from cardiac arrest had autoregulation monitoring during the first 72h after return of circulation with an index derived from near-infrared spectroscopy in a pilot study.
