Background: It is generally accepted that morphine affords cardioprotection against ischemia/reperfusion injury. Inhibition of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP) is considered an end target for cardioprotection. The aim of this study was to investigate the involvement of opioid receptors (OR) and MPTP in morphine-induced postconditioning (M-Post).

Primary acinic cell carcinoma of the breast: a case report with an immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies.

Acinic cell carcinoma (ACC) of the breast is extremely rare and is characterized by widespread acinar cell-like differentiation. We report of a 39-year-old woman presented with a palpable breast mass with significant morphological, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings. Histologically, ACC showed a diffuse glandular infiltrative pattern, with small acinar or glandular structures mixed with solid nests.

Is the BRAF(V600E) mutation useful as a predictor of preoperative risk in papillary thyroid cancer?

Objective: Recent studies have shown that a BRAF(V600E) reflects poor prognosis, mainly in Western countries. However, some clinicians in Japan have suggested that the BRAF(V600E) mutation is not associated with a poor prognosis. Therefore, we investigated a relationship between BRAF(V600E) mutation and clinicopathologic factors.

Anti-allergic effects and mechanisms of action of the ethanolic extract of Angelica gigas in dinitrofluorobenzene-induced inflammation models.

To confirm the anti-allergic effects of the ethanolic extract of Angelica gigas (EAG), the levels of ear erythema, ear weight, vascular leakage, heamatology, tumor-necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6 and immunoglobulin E from mice sensitized with 2,4-dinitroflurorobenzene were examined. The results showed that EAG reduced ear erythema and ear weight; we also found that Evan's blue leakage decreased. Furthermore, the levels of interleukin-6 and immunoglobulin E in the serum were significantly inhibited.

Performing contralateral central lymph node dissection in papillary thyroid carcinoma: a decision approach.

Background: Substantial controversy exists over the role of prophylactic neck dissection for patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). We hypothesized that a therapeutic strategy of performing a routine intraoperative frozen section of the ipsilateral central lymph node (CLN) after elective ipsilateral CLN dissection (CLND) for all unilateral PTC and then performing a contralateral CLND if the frozen section is positive for malignancy would reduce morbidity compared to a therapeutic strategy of routine bilateral CLND.

Methods: In a group of 419 patients with PTC undergoing thyroidectomy during study the period, the 203 patients who had unilateral PTC and no evidence of adenopathy on ultrasonography were prospectively enrolled in our nonrandomized study that was performed between March 2009 and February 2010.

Kappa-opioid receptor activation during reperfusion limits myocardial infarction via ERK1/2 activation in isolated rat hearts.

Background: We investigated whether p42/p44 extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK1/2) and/or phosphatidylinositol-3-OH kinase (PI3K)-Akt play a crucial role in cardioprotection by κ-opioid receptor (KOP) activation.

Methods: Langendorff perfused rat hearts were subjected to 30 min of regional ischemia and 2 h of reperfusion. Antagonists of ERK1/2 and PI3K were perfused in hearts treated with the KOP agonist U50488H (U50).

Origin of restenosis after drug-eluting stent implantation in hyperglycemia is inflammatory cells and thrombus.

Aims: The cellular and molecular mechanisms and safety after drug-eluting stent (DES) implantation in diabetic patients are still poorly understood; therefore, in this study, we evaluated the pathologic responses of the sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) or paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) in a type I diabetes mellitus (DM) rat model.

Methods: The type I DM rat model was manipulated by intra-peritoneal streptozotocin injection. Two weeks later, DES was implanted in the aorta of rats with hyperglycemia or not as a control.

Background: Little is known regarding image quality and the required radiation dose for step-and-shoot and retrospective coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) with tube current modulation (TCM) in 128-slice multidetector CT (MDCT) coronary angiography.

Purpose: To compare image quality and radiation dose in patients who underwent 128-slice MDCT by the step-and-shoot method with those in patients who underwent 128-slice MDCT with retrospective CCTA with TCM.

Material And Methods: CCTA obtained with 128-slice MDCT was retrospectively evaluated in 160 patients.

Purpose: Prostate stem cell antigen has become a promising target as a potential biomarker for prostate cancer, but to our knowledge there are no reports of a genetic variation of the PSCA gene associated with prostate cancer risk. We determined the potential association between specific variations of the PSCA gene and prostate cancer in Korean men.

Materials And Methods: In this hospital based, case-control study 194 patients newly diagnosed with histologically confirmed prostate cancer were enrolled.

Determination of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in plastics using organic-assisted alkaline extraction.

An organic-assisted alkaline extraction method was developed for the determination of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in plastics. The solubilization of polymer as a pre-step of the alkaline extraction provided good extraction efficiency of Cr(VI) from the sample. The optimization of the experimental conditions affecting the extraction and UV-vis spectrophotometric analysis was accomplished by evaluating the recovery rate of Cr(VI) through the analysis of Cr(VI) in in-house polymer reference materials (RMs).

The novel role of mast cells in the microenvironment of acute myocardial infarction.

Mast cells are multifunctional cells containing various mediators, such as cytokines, tryptase, and histamine, and they have been identified in infarct myocardium. Here, we elucidated the roles of mast cells in a myocardial infarction (MI) rat model. We studied the physiological and functional roles of mast cell granules (MCGs), isolated from rat peritoneal fluid, on endothelial cells, neonatal cardiomyocytes, and infarct heart (1-hour occlusion of left coronary artery followed by reperfusion).

Impact of depression and activities of daily living on the fear of falling in Korean community-dwelling elderly.

This study determined the predictors of the fear of falling (FOF) in 213 South Korean community-dwelling elderly. The Fall Efficacy Scale, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Korean Geriatric Depression Screening Scale, and Barthel Index were used to measure the FOF, sleep quality, depression, and activities of daily living, respectively. In addition, information regarding the participants' demographic details and the number of types of medication was collected.

Crystal structure and spontaneous magnetism of BiFeO3 powder synthesized by hydrothermal method.

Single-phase BiFeO3 powder was successively synthesized by a low-temperature hydrothermal method. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results showed that BiFeO3 powder had several hundred nanometers to micrometer-sized particles with a broad size distribution. BiFeO3 powder showed weak-ferromagnetic behavior with a small magnetization value (Ms approximately 20 memu/g) at room temperature.

The expression of estrogen receptors in the tenosynovium of postmenopausal women with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to investigate estrogen receptor (ER) expression in tenosynovial tissues of postmenopausal woman with idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) to determine whether estrogen contributes to the pathogenesis of this condition. Biopsy samples of tenosynovial tissues were collected from 14 postmenopausal women (mean age; 57, range; 46-69 years) undergoing surgery for idiopathic CTS, and control specimens of tenosynovial tissue were collected from 6 postmenopausal women (mean age; 59, range; 48-68 years) without CTS. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations were performed to determine the distributions of ER-α and ER-β in tenosynovial tissues.

Oxidative stress in subsynovial connective tissue of idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome.

Ischemic-reperfusion injury is thought to be a cause of idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). The purpose of this study was to determine whether oxidative stress caused by ischemia-reperfusion injury in subsynovial connective tissue is associated with idiopathic CTS and its symptoms. Bioptic samples of tenosynovial tissue were collected from 20 idiopathic CTS patients during surgery.

Right ventricular wall hematoma secondary to percutaneous coronary intervention.

Intramyocardial hematoma is known to be associated with myocardial infarction, chest trauma, coronary artery bypass operation, and complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We describe here a rare case of 50-year-old man with a huge right ventricular (RV) wall hematoma which was newly developed two hours after PCI. The patient was treated conservatively with a successful outcome.

Atypical manifestations of hepatitis A infection: a prospective, multicenter study in Korea.

The clinical outcome of symptomatic hepatitis A and the incidence and clinical characteristics of atypical presentation of hepatitis A were studied using prospective, multicenter design. The atypical presentation included delayed anti-hepatitis A virus (HAV) immunoglobulin M (IgM) seroconversion defined as positive anti-HAV IgM on the repeated test within 7 days of hospital admission after the initially negative result, prolonged cholestasis, and acute kidney injury (AKI). A total of 595 patients with symptomatic hepatitis A requiring hospital admission were enrolled prospectively from September 2006 to August 2008 in four major hospitals in a Korean city with a population of approximately 1 million.

Successful revascularization of coronary artery occluded by massive intracoronary thrombi with alteplase and percutaneous coronary intervention.

A 67-year-old man was admitted to our institution with sudden and persistent chest pain for 3 days. Coronary angiography showed massive thrombotic occlusion of the right coronary artery. The patient received intracoronary thrombolysis with alteplase (recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator, rt-PA).

Impact of metabolic syndrome on in-stent restenosis and clinical outcomes after percutaneous coronary stent implantation.

We investigated the impact of metabolic syndrome (MS) on the occurrence of in-stent restenosis (ISR) and long-term major adverse cardiac events (MACEs), including cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, and target vessel revascularization (TVR) during a follow-up period of 36 months after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stent implantation in patients with significant preexisting coronary artery disease. MS was not an independent predictor of increased ISR and MACE after PCI.
