This study introduces innovative multi-chip white LED systems that combine an InGaN blue LED and green/red or green/amber/red full down-converted, phosphor-conversion LEDs (pc-LEDs). Efficient green, amber, and red full down-converted pc-LEDs were fabricated by simply capping a long-wave pass filter (LWPF) on top of LED packing associated with each corresponding powder phosphor. The principal advantage of this type of color-mixing approach in newly developed multi-chip white LEDs based on colored pc-LEDs is thought to be dynamic control of the chromaticity and better light quality.

We previously showed that the cellular retinoic acid-binding protein 2 (CRABP2) gene was up-regulated during the implantation window period in the endometrium of patients with unexplained recurrent spontaneous abortion. Here, we report that trophoblast spheroids cocultured with a human endometrial cell line stably overexpressing CRABP2 are defective in expansion and exhibit apoptosis, suggesting that the altered expression level of endometrial CRABP2 is involved in abnormal endometrium-trophoblast interaction, which leads to implantation failure.

Waves of cyclin synthesis and degradation regulate the activity of Cdc2 protein kinase during the cell cycle. Cdc2 inactivation by Wee1B-mediated phosphorylation is necessary for arrest of the oocyte at G2-prophase, but it is unclear whether this regulation functions later during the metaphase-to-anaphase transition. We show that reactivation of a Wee1B pathway triggers the decrease in Cdc2 activity during egg activation.

A variety of efficient green, yellow, and amber monochromatic phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes (pc-LEDs) were fabricated by simply capping a long-wave pass filter (LWPF) on top of LED packing associated with each corresponding powder phosphor. In this paper, the luminous efficacy and color purity of two green, three yellow, and two amber pc-LEDs were reviewed by comparing the optical properties and current/temperature stability of each LWPF-capped pc-LED. The simple combination of LWPFs and phosphor materials in the pc-LEDs provide a simple means of addressing the low luminous efficacy problem of III-V monochromatic semiconductor LEDs in the various colors of the wavelength range between green and amber (known as the "green gap").

Measurements and calculations of magnetotransport in the organic conductor (DMET)(2)I(3) detect and simulate all angular magnetoresistance oscillations known for quasi-one-dimensional conductors. By employing the actual triclinic crystal structure in the calculations, these results address the putative vanishing of the primary magnetoresistance phenomenon, the Lebed magic angle effect, for orientations in which it was expected to be strongest. They also show a common origin for Lebed and the so-called Lee-Naughton oscillations and confirm the generalized nature of angular effects in such systems.

Successful in vitro differentiation of spermatogenic cells into spermatids appears to offer extremely attractive potential for the treatment of impaired spermatogenesis and male infertility. Experimental evidence indicates that biocompatible polymers may improve in vitro reconstitution and regeneration of tissues of various origins. Here, we fabricated highly porous biodegradable poly(D,L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) or PLGA co-polymer scaffolds by combining the gas-foaming and salt-leaching methods, using ammonium bicarbonate as a porogen, which allowed us to generate polymer scaffolds with a high density of interconnected pores of 400-500 µm in average diameter, concomitant with a high malleability to mould a wide range of temporal tissue scaffolds requiring a specific shape and geometry.

Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the head of medaka (Oryzias latipes) were investigated to assess the biological effects of benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) on genomic alterations. Eight and ten DEGs were identified in response to short (48 h) and long-term (15 days) exposure to BaP (25 microg/L), respectively, using annealing control primer-based polymerase chain reaction. Among the DEGs, matrilin 1 and prothrombin were commonly detected, suggesting that BaP exposure can alter the expression of genes associated with the formation of extracellular matrix and blood coagulation in the head of medaka.

We demonstrate the combined effects of a microcavity structure and light-recycling filters (LRFs) on the forward electrical efficiency of phosphor-converted white organic light-emitting diodes (pc-WOLEDs).
