Motivation: This paper proposes a small-sized hologram system for the 3D imaging of lesions in a clinical environment. In a general hologram system, the distance between the beam-generating device and the screen (400 mm) and the size of the screen must be increased proportionally to obtain excellent image quality. However, in a clinical environment, the beam spread distance and screen size must be reduced.

Purpose: T stage plays an important role in the classification of subgroups in stage II colon cancer. Patients with pathologic T4 are at high risk of recurrence and it is recommended to include adjuvant chemotherapy in the treatment plan, while this is not necessary in pathologic T3. There is a discrepancy between the surgical T stage (sT), as determined by the surgeon in the operative field, and pathologic T stage (pT).

Background: Colorectal cancer is the third most common malignant disease and the second leading cause of death worldwide. Previous studies showed improved bioavailability and cytotoxicity of ginsenoside-modified nanostructured lipid carrier containing curcumin (G-NLC) in human colon cancer cell lines. This study aimed to evaluate the safety and tolerability with long-term survival rates in patients with colorectal cancer with unresectable metastases after treatment with first-line bevacizumab/FOLFIRI (folinic acid, bolus/continuous fluorouracil, and irinotecan) in combination with a dietary supplement of G-NLC.

Purpose: Curative treatment is challenging in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer and unresectable metastases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of short-course radiotherapy (RT) followed by systemic chemotherapy for patients with rectal cancer with mesorectal fascia (MRF) involvement and unresectable distant metastases.

Methods: The study included consecutive patients diagnosed as having metastatic mid-to-low rectal cancer treated with short-course RT followed by systemic chemotherapy for conversion radical or palliative surgery between 2014 and 2019 at Gil Medical Center.

Background: Lipid rafts (LRs), cholesterol-enriched microdomains on cell membranes, are increasingly viewed as signalling platforms governing critical facets of cancer progression. The phenotype of cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) presents significant hurdles for successful cancer treatment, and the expression of several CSC markers is associated with LR integrity. However, LR implications in CSCs remain unclear.

Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1), an NAD -dependent histone/protein deacetylase, has multifaceted functions in various biological events such as inflammation, aging, and energy metabolism. The role of SIRT1 in carcinogenesis, however, is still under debate. Recent studies have indicated that aberrant overexpression of SIRT1 is correlated with metastasis and poor prognosis in several types of malignancy, including colorectal cancer.

Purpose: Under the South Korea's unique health insurance structure, any new surgical technology must be evaluated first by the government in order to consider whether that particular technology can be applied to patients for further clinical trials as categorized as 'New Health Technology,' then potentially covered by the insurance sometime later. The aim of this meta-analysis was to assess the safety and efficacy of transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME) for rectal cancer, activated by the National Evidence-based Healthcare Collaborating Agency (NECA) TaTME committee.

Methods: We systematically searched Ovid-MEDLINE, Ovid-Embase, Cochrane, and Korean databases (from their inception until August 31, 2019) for studies published that compare TaTME with laparoscopic total mesorectal excision (LaTME).

Chemoradiation (CRT) is commonly used as an adjuvant or neoadjuvant treatment for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. However, resistant cells manage to survive and propagate after CRT, increasing the risk of recurrence. Thus, better understanding the mechanism of resistant cancer cells is required to achieve better clinical outcomes.

While failure in resolution of inflammation is considered to increase the risk of tumorigenesis, there is paucity of experimental as well as clinical evidence supporting this association. Resolvin D1 (RvD1) is a representative pro-resolving lipid mediator that is endogenously generated from docosahexaenoic acid for the resolution of inflammation. Here, we report a decreased level of RvD1 in the blood from colorectal cancer patients and mice having inflammation-induced colon cancer, suggesting plasma RvD1 as a potential biomarker for monitoring colorectal cancer.

SIRT1 is a mammalian NAD-dependent deacetylase, which is known to be involved in various physiological events, such as adaptive response to environmental stresses including caloric restriction, as well as in aging and cellular senescence. However, recent studies have revealed overexpression of SIRT1 in many different types of human malignancies, particularly colon cancer. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine that plays a major role in invasiveness, stemness and progression of colon cancer.

Background: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy (PCRT) followed by surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy is the current standard treatment for stage II/III rectal cancer. However, radiotherapy in the pelvic area is commonly associated with complications such as anastomotic leakage, sexual dysfunction, and fecal incontinence. Recently, the MERCURY study showed that preoperative high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) helped to selectively avoid PCRT.
