The minimal basis iterative Stockholder (MBIS) decomposition of molecular electron densities into atomic quantities is an attractive approach for deriving electrostatic parameters in force fields. The MBIS-derived atomic charges, however, in general tend to overestimate the molecular dipole and quadrupole moments by ∼10%. We show that it is possible to derive a constrained MBIS model where the atomic charges or a combination of atomic charges and dipoles exactly reproduce the molecular dipole and quadrupole moments for molecules.

Pathological tau spreads throughout the brain along neuronal connections in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the mechanisms that underlie this process are poorly understood. Given the high incidence and deleterious consequences of epileptiform activity in AD, we hypothesized neuronal hyperactivity and seizures are key factors in tau spread. To examine these interactions, we created a novel mouse model involving the cross of targeted recombination in active populations (TRAP) mice and the 5 times familial AD (5XFAD; 5X-TRAP) model allowing for the permanent fluorescent labelling of neuronal activity.

The first search for soft unclustered energy patterns (SUEPs) is performed using an integrated luminosity of 138  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data at sqrt[s]=13  TeV, collected in 2016-2018 by the CMS detector at the LHC. Such SUEPs are predicted by hidden valley models with a new, confining force with a large 't Hooft coupling. In events with boosted topologies, selected by high-threshold hadronic triggers, the multiplicity and sphericity of clustered tracks are used to reject the background from standard model quantum chromodynamics.

We describe an efficient implementation of cluster perturbation and Møller-Plesset Lagrangian energy series through the fifth order that targets the coupled cluster singles and doubles energy utilizing the resolution of the identity approximation. We illustrate the computational performance of the implementation by performing ground state energy calculations on systems with up to 1200 basis functions using a single node and by comparison to conventional coupled cluster singles and doubles calculations. We further show that our hybrid message passing interface/open multiprocessing parallel implementation that also utilizes graphical processing units can be used to obtain fifth order energies on systems with almost 1200 basis functions with a 90 min "time to solution" running on Frontier at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Unlabelled: Neuronal hyperexcitability is a hallmark of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) but its relationship with the TDP-43 aggregates that comprise the predominant pathology in over 90% of ALS cases remains unclear. Emerging evidence in tissue and slice culture models indicate that TDP-43 pathology induces neuronal hyperexcitability suggesting it may be responsible for the excitotoxicity long believed to be a major driver of ALS neuron death. Here, we characterized hyperexcitability and neurodegeneration in the hippocampus of doxycycline-regulatable rNLS8 mice (NEFH-tTA x tetO-hTDP-43ΔNLS), followed by treatment with AAV encoded DREADDs and anti-seizure medications to measure the effect on behavioral function and neurodegeneration.

In this paper, we conduct a cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of five alternative management strategies for red deer in Denmark: free harvest, trophy hunting, maximum harvest and two cases for natural demographic population compositions. To capture the outcome under each strategy we use a biological sex- and age-structured population model. The net benefit function includes meat values, recreational values, browsing damage costs and traffic damage costs and these values and costs are assumed to differ for the various sex and age classes of red deer.

The production of ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions is studied in their dimuon decay channel using the CMS detector at the LHC. The ϒ(3S) meson is observed for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, with a significance above 5 standard deviations. The ratios of yields measured in Pb-Pb and pp collisions are reported for both the ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons, as functions of transverse momentum and Pb-Pb collision centrality.

Urea is believed to have been essential to the synthesis of prebiotic nucleotides and thereby the RNA or DNA of the first lifeforms.
