Objective: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a painful inflammatory disorder of the thyroid gland, which - after a phase of thyrotoxicosis - leads to transient, or less frequently permanent hypothyroidism. Apart from a strong association with specific HLA alleles, the causes are uncertain. Viral disease has been hypothesised as a trigger, with Enteroviruses, namely Echoviruses and Coxsackieviruses, showing a seasonal distribution that coincides with the incidence of SAT.

Utilities Associated with the Treatment of Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD): A Time Trade-off (TTO) Study in the UK and Canada.

Purpose: Growth hormone deficiency (GHD) causes decreased growth rate in children, resulting in short stature in childhood and adulthood. Daily subcutaneous injections with growth hormone (GH) have been standard treatment. Newer weekly GH formulations now exist.

Multiplex genome editing eliminates lactate production without impacting growth rate in mammalian cells.

The Warburg effect, which describes the fermentation of glucose to lactate even in the presence of oxygen, is ubiquitous in proliferative mammalian cells, including cancer cells, but poses challenges for biopharmaceutical production as lactate accumulation inhibits cell growth and protein production. Previous efforts to eliminate lactate production in cells for bioprocessing have failed as lactate dehydrogenase is essential for cell growth. Here, we effectively eliminate lactate production in Chinese hamster ovary and in the human embryonic kidney cell line HEK293 by simultaneous knockout of lactate dehydrogenases and pyruvate dehydrogenase kinases, thereby removing a negative feedback loop that typically inhibits pyruvate conversion to acetyl-CoA.

Absorption cross section of gas phase isoprene in the infrared-visible range.

We have recorded the gas phase spectrum of isoprene at room temperature from the mid-infrared range and into the visible range (600 cm to 17050 cm). Absorption spectra were obtained by Fourier transform infrared, conventional dispersion ultraviolet-visible-near-infrared and cavity ring-down spectroscopy to cover the entire range with a resolution comparable to that of the instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope. We have assigned the CH-stretching fundamental and overtone bands corresponding to the Δv=1-6 transitions based on anharmonic vibrational calculations using normal mode and local mode models, for the lower- and higher-energy regions, respectively.

Risk factors for the incursion of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus into poultry and other captive bird holdings in Denmark from 2020 to 2023: A case-control study.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is a major concern in terms of animal and human health. Between October 2020 and September 2023, there were 36 HPAI outbreaks detected in poultry and other captive birds in Denmark. However, it is often not possible to determine the exact route of introduction.

GABA receptors (GABARs) are the major elements of inhibitory neurotransmission in the central nervous system (CNS). However, the complexity of de novo synthesis of NAS derivatives has hindered attempts to circumvent the principal limitations of using endogenous NASs, including selectivity and limited oral bioavailability.

Despite the recent surge of viral metagenomic studies, it remains a significant challenge to recover complete virus genomes from metagenomic data. The majority of viral contigs generated from de novo assembly programs are highly fragmented, presenting significant challenges to downstream analysis and inference. To address this issue, we have developed Virseqimprover, a computational pipeline that can extend assembled contigs to complete or nearly complete genomes while maintaining extension quality.

Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder among children and adolescents. The disorder negatively influences their academic performance and social relations, and their quality of life (QoL) is lower than that of peers without ADHD. The majority of children and adolescents with ADHD are treated with medication that potentially has an insufficient effect or frequently occurring adverse events.

Characterization of the role of spatial proximity of DNA double-strand breaks in the formation of CRISPR-Cas9-induced large structural variations.

Structural variations (SVs) play important roles in genetic diversity, evolution, and carcinogenesis and are, as such, important for human health. However, it remains unclear how spatial proximity of double-strand breaks (DSBs) affects the formation of SVs. To investigate if spatial proximity between two DSBs affects DNA repair, we used data from 3C experiments (Hi-C, ChIA-PET, and ChIP-seq) to identify highly interacting loci on six different chromosomes.

Supervised exercise-based rehabilitation for people with intermittent claudication-Study protocol for a Danish implementation process (StRiDE).

Introduction: Intermittent claudication is a peripheral artery disease caused by arteriosclerosis. People with intermittent claudication experience leg cramping during walking, with relief of symptoms during rest. Evidence shows that by participating in supervised exercise therapy and smoking cessation programs, people with intermittent claudication can reduce those symptoms and improve health-related quality of life and maximal walking distance while minimizing the need for an operation.

Background And Purpose:  Disease- or procedure-specific registers offer valuable information but are costly and often inaccurate regarding outcome measures. Alternatively, automatically collected data from administrative systems could be a solution, given their high completeness. Our primary aim was to validate a method for identifying secondary surgical procedures (reoperations) in the Danish National Patient Register (DNPR) within the first year following primary fracture surgery.

Poststroke Translocator Protein Expression Dynamics and Correlations to Chronic Infarction: A -CLINDE-SPECT Study.

Background And Purpose: This study aims to investigate the longitudinal changes in translocator protein (TSPO) following stroke in different brain regions and potential associations with chronic brain infarction.

Methods: Twelve patients underwent SPECT using the TSPO tracer 6-Chloro-2-(4'-123I-Iodophenyl)-3-(N,N-Diethyl)-Imidazo[1,2-a]Pyridine-3-Acetamide, as well as structural MRI, at 10, 41, and 128 days (median) after ischemic infarction in the middle cerebral artery. TSPO expression was measured in lesional (MRI lesion and SPECT lesion), connected (pons and ipsilesional thalamus), and nonconnected (ipsilesional cerebellum and contralesional occipital cortex) regions.

Extracellular vesicles from diverse fungal pathogens induce species-specific and endocytosis-dependent immunomodulation.

Microbial pathogens generate extracellular vesicles (EVs) for intercellular communication and quorum sensing. Microbial EVs also induce inflammatory pathways within host innate immune cells. We previously demonstrated that EVs secreted by trigger type I interferon signaling in host cells specifically via the cGAS-STING innate immune signaling pathway.

The distribution of fitness effects (DFE) characterizes the range of selection coefficients from which new mutations are sampled, and thus holds a fundamentally important role in evolutionary genomics. To date, DFE inference in primates has been largely restricted to haplorrhines, with limited data availability leaving the other suborder of primates, strepsirrhines, largely under-explored. To advance our understanding of the population genetics of this important taxonomic group, we here map exonic divergence in aye-ayes ( ) - the only extant member of the Daubentoniidae family of the Strepsirrhini suborder.

Ten species comprise half of the bacteriology literature, leaving most species unstudied.

Microbiology research has historically focused on a few species of model organisms. Our bibliographic analysis finds extreme bias in the distribution of bacteriology research across species, with half of all papers referencing only ten species and 74% of all known species remaining unstudied. Microbiologists will need to broaden their perspective and embrace complexity to develop a complete understanding of the microbial world.

The Role of Ombuds in Graduate Medical Education: Fostering Wellness and Psychological Safety.

The authors propose an educational innovation in graduate medical education, the creation of an Education Ombudsperson. Although this role has been implemented for faculty and students within the medical field, it has not been described in residency programs. The Ombudsperson for house staff is distinct from institutional or programmatic leadership.

Background: Lowering the age for receiving the first dose of a measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) has been suggested to close the emerging immunity gap in infants. However, tolerability remains one of the main concerns for vaccine-hesitant parents. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of reactogenicity following MCV1 in infants under 12 months of age.

Comparing Patient-Reported Outcomes of Lateral to Paramedian Lumbar Disc Herniation: A Propensity-Score Matched Observational Study.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate patient-reported outcomes (PROs) following lumbar discectomy on patients with lateral lumbar disc herniation (LDH) compared to patients with paramedian LDH.

Background: Surgery for disc herniation is one of the most common procedures of the lumbar spine. LDHs can be divided into median, paramedian, foraminal and extraforaminal types based on the anatomical site of the lesion.

Purpose: Whether breast density mediates associations between early life body size and pubertal timing with postmenopausal breast cancer is underexplored.

Methods: We studied 33,939 Danish women attending the Capital Mammography Screening Program at ages 50-69 years. Early life anthropometry and pubertal timing information came from the Copenhagen School Health Records Register.

Examining Health and Social Support Among University Housekeepers: A Mixed-Methods Exploratory Study.

This pilot, exploratory project examined the relationship among the health, work, and social support of university housekeepers. The first objective was to examine the influence of social support on work-related outcomes among university housekeepers. The secondary objective was to examine the influence of social support on physical and psychological health among housekeepers.

Aim: Time-restricted eating (TRE) limits the time for food intake to typically 6-10 h/day without other dietary restrictions. The aim of the RESET2 (the REStricted Eating Time in the treatment of type 2 diabetes) trial is to investigate the effects on glycaemic control (HbA) and the feasibility of a 1-year TRE intervention in individuals with overweight/obesity and type 2 diabetes. Effects of Betaine and Polydextrose on Intestinal Microbiota and Liver Ergothioneine in a High-Fat Diet-Fed Mouse Model and a Human Colonic Simulation Model.

Background/objectives: Ergothioneine (EGT) is an effective antioxidant that animals cannot produce and has an important anti-inflammatory role in cell protection, which can help lower the risk of various diseases. In this study, we investigated the potential role of gut microbiota in the production of EGT, which was found to increase in the mouse liver after dietary supplementation with betaine (BET) or polydextrose (PDX).

Methods: The effects of BET and PDX on the gut microbiota and tissue EGT content were investigated using a diet-induced obese mouse model and simulated fermentation in the human colon.
