Article Synopsis
  • Woodchip bioreactors (WBRs) help reduce excess nitrate leaching from agriculture to water bodies, but their efficiency drops in cold temperatures (<10°C).
  • Researchers tested bacterial bioaugmentation to improve nitrate removal rates in WBRs, finding short-term increases in nitrate-reducing microbes after inoculation, but the effects faded quickly.
  • Metagenome analyses revealed temporary shifts in bacterial communities and increased genes related to nitrate transformation, highlighting the need for better inoculation methods to sustain improvements in nitrate removal at lower temperatures.

People have influenced Earth's biodiversity for millennia, including numerous introductions of domestic and wild species to islands. Here, we explore the origins and ecology of the Santa Catalina Island ground squirrel (SCIGS; ), one of only five endemic terrestrial mammals found on California's Santa Catalina Island. We synthesized all records of archaeological/palaeontological SCIGS, conducted radiocarbon dating and stable isotope analysis of the potentially earliest SCIGS remains and performed genetic analysis of modern SCIGS.

Article Synopsis
  • Paclitaxel-coated balloons (PCB) are currently used for treating coronary lesions, but researchers are exploring sirolimus-coated balloons (SCB) as an alternative to see if they perform similarly.
  • A study involving 70 patients across Germany and Switzerland tested the SCB against PCB, focusing on their effectiveness in preventing late lumen loss (LLL) in arteries after 6 months.
  • Results indicated no significant differences between the two treatments in terms of LLL and clinical outcomes, suggesting that SCBs can be a viable alternative to PCBs in coronary interventions.

The ability to freely control the polarization of X-rays enables measurement techniques relying on circular or linear dichroism, which have become indispensable tools for characterizing the properties of chiral molecules or magnetic structures. Therefore, the demand for polarization control in X-ray free-electron lasers is increasing to enable polarization-sensitive dynamical studies on ultrafast time scales. The soft X-ray branch Athos of SwissFEL was designed with the aim of providing freely adjustable and arbitrary polarization by building its undulator solely from modules of the novel Apple X type.

Background: Proper hand hygiene (HH), which includes sanitizing with alcohol-based hand rub (ABHR) (or handwashing with soap and water if ABHR is unavailable), is key for preventing healthcare-associated infections (HCAI), including COVID-19. Understanding drivers of HH is key to improving adherence.

Aim: This study aims to explore drivers and barriers to HH practice at two hospitals in the Dominican Republic in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic to inform development of HH behaviour change interventions.

Citrate-coated electrostatically stabilized very small superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (VSOPs) have been successfully tested as magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) contrast agents and are promising tools for molecular imaging of atherosclerosis. Their repeated use in the background of pre-existing hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis has not yet been studied. This study aimed to investigate the effect of multiple intravenous injections of VSOPs in atherosclerotic mice.

Three-dimensional reconstructions of state-of-the-art high-resolution imaging are progressively being used more for preprocedural assessment in thoracic surgery. It is a promising tool that aims to improve patient-specific treatment planning, for example, for minimally invasive or robotic-assisted lung resections. Increasingly available mixed-reality hardware based on video pass-through technology enables the projection of image data as a hologram onto the patient.

Article Synopsis
  • In patients with cystic fibrosis treated with elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor (ETI), significant improvements in sinonasal symptoms and a notable increase in nasal nitric oxide (nNO) levels were observed after several months of treatment.
  • The study involved measuring nNO levels in 25 PwCF-ETI, 7 PwCF-non ETI, and 32 healthy controls, showing that only the treated group experienced a significant rise in nNO levels, reaching the normal range by follow-up.
  • The findings suggest that nNO could be a useful non-invasive biomarker for assessing sinonasal inflammation in cystic fibrosis patients and might correlate

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a high prevalence of hyperphosphatemia, where uremic toxins like inorganic phosphate (Pi) induce a cardiovascular remodeling. Related disorders like atherosclerosis bear the risk of increased morbidity and mortality. We previously found that Pi stimulates the synthesis and sulfation of the negatively charged glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC).

The extracellular matrix (ECM) is a network of macromolecules that presents a vital scaffold for cells and enables multiple ways of cellular communication. Thus, it is essential for many physiological processes such as development, tissue morphogenesis, homeostasis, the shape and partially the size of the body and its organs. To ensure these, the composition of the ECM is tissue-specific and highly dynamic.

We present the generation of x-ray pulses with average pulse energies up to one millijoule and rms pulse durations down to the femtosecond level. We have produced these intense and short pulses by employing the fresh-slice multistage amplification scheme with a transversely tilted electron beam in a free-electron laser. In this scheme, a short pulse is produced in the first stage and later amplified by fresh parts of the electron bunch in up to a total of four stages of amplification.

Uremic toxins exert pathophysiological effects on cells and tissues, such as the generation of a pro-calcifying subtype of exosome-like extracellular vesicles (EVs) in vascular cells. Little is known about the effects of the toxins on the surface structure of EVs. Thus, we studied the effects of uremic toxins on the abundance of sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in EVs, and the implications for binding of ligands such as very small superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (VSOPs) which could be of relevance for radiological EV-imaging.

This paper introduces assignment flows for density matrices as state spaces for representation and analysis of data associated with vertices of an underlying weighted graph. Determining an assignment flow by geometric integration of the defining dynamical system causes an interaction of the non-commuting states across the graph, and the assignment of a pure (rank-one) state to each vertex after convergence. Adopting the Riemannian-Bogoliubov-Kubo-Mori metric from information geometry leads to closed-form local expressions that can be computed efficiently and implemented in a fine-grained parallel manner.
