Purpose: To examine the association between glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) use and the development of glaucoma in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

Design: Nationwide, nested case-control study.

Participants: From a nationwide cohort of 264 708 individuals, we identified 1737 incident glaucoma cases and matched them to 8685 glaucoma-free controls, all aged more than 21 years and treated with metformin and a second-line antihyperglycemic drug formulation, with no history of glaucoma, eye trauma, or eye surgery.

Purpose: Inhibition of VEGF in the eye is an important treatment modality for reducing proliferation and migration of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) in age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Additionally, previous studies suggest calcium-independent phospholipase A(2) group VIA (iPLA(2)-VIA) to be a potential regulator of cell proliferation and migration, and evidence show abundant expression of iPLA(2)-VIA in RPE cells. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the potential role of iPLA(2)-VIA in VEGF-induced proliferation and migration of RPE cells.

Phospholipase A2 (PLA2) is a group of enzymes discovered more than a century ago in insect and snake poison. Not more than 20 years ago they were identified in vertebrates, and during the last five years, research has accelerated in relation to isolating and cloning several members of this super-family in humans. PLA2 inhibitors are in the process of being developed for pharmaceutical use.
