Plant-plant interactions are major determinants of the dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems. There is a long tradition in the study of these interactions, their mechanisms and their consequences using experimental, observational and theoretical approaches. Empirical studies overwhelmingly focus at the level of species pairs or small sets of species.

Climate change is forcing species to shift their distribution ranges. Animal seed dispersers might be particularly important in assisting plants tracking suitable climates to higher elevations. However, this role is still poorly understood due to a lack of comprehensive multi-guild datasets along elevational gradients.

Article Synopsis
  • Managing anticoagulant therapy in patients with conditions like kidney disease, liver disease, and obesity involves specific challenges due to altered drug clearance, metabolism, and distribution.
  • Renal impairment can impact how drugs are eliminated from the body, while liver disease changes how drugs are processed and can affect coagulation.
  • A one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work; personalized treatment plans are crucial for safely balancing the risks and benefits in patients with increased bleeding risk or thrombocytopenia.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to see if different exercise weights affected pain levels in people with patellar tendinopathy during single-legged leg presses.
  • - 14 participants completed leg presses at three different relative loads (6RM, 10RM, and 14RM), rating their pain after each session using a scale from 0 to 10.
  • - Results showed no significant differences in pain levels across the loads, suggesting that patients can use higher weights without increasing pain, potentially aiding tendon recovery.

Article Synopsis
  • - Seed dispersal is vital for the survival of ecosystems, particularly in fragmented areas like Europe, but ongoing loss of animals might jeopardize this process.
  • - A comprehensive review was conducted to construct a seed dispersal network across Europe and assess the conservation status of species involved, using IUCN data.
  • - The findings indicate that one-third of disperser species are at risk of extinction, with 30% of plant species relying on those dispersers facing threats, revealing a significant seed dispersal crisis in Europe that requires immediate attention.

Despite the frequent occurrence of congested game fixtures in elite ice hockey, the postgame recovery pattern has not previously been investigated. The purpose of the present study was therefore to evaluate the acute decrements and subsequent recovery of skeletal muscle glycogen levels, muscle function and repeated-sprint ability following ice hockey game-play. Sixteen male players from the Danish U20 national team completed a training game with muscle biopsies obtained before, postgame and following ~38 h of recovery (day 2).

Insects provide key pollination services in most terrestrial biomes, but this service depends on a multistep interaction between insect and plant. An insect needs to visit a flower, receive pollen from the anthers, move to another conspecific flower, and finally deposit the pollen on a receptive stigma. Each of these steps may be affected by climate change, and focusing on only one of them (e.

Objective: In the 2020 UNAIDS HIV treatment goals, 90% of people living with HIV (PLHIV) should be diagnosed, 90% of these should receive antiretroviral treatment (ART) and 90% of these should be virally suppressed. We aimed to evaluate whether Guinea-Bissau fulfills the 2020 treatment goals for both for HIV-1 and HIV-2.

Design: By combining data from a general population survey, treatment records from HIV clinics across Guinea-Bissau and a biobank from patients attending the largest HIV clinics in Bissau, we estimated each column of the 90-90-90 cascade.

Overuse injury in tendon tissue (tendinopathy) is a frequent and costly musculoskeletal disorder and represents a major clinical problem with unsolved pathogenesis. Studies in mice have demonstrated that circadian clock-controlled genes are vital for protein homeostasis and important in the development of tendinopathy. We performed RNA sequencing, collagen content and ultrastructural analyses on human tendon biopsies obtained 12 h apart in healthy individuals to establish whether human tendon is a peripheral clock tissue and we performed RNA sequencing on patients with chronic tendinopathy to examine the expression of circadian clock genes in tendinopathic tissues.

Tendinopathy is considered an overuse syndrome which usually results from excessive loading of the tendon during vigorous training activity. There are, however, various causes of this condition other than mechanical causes. This is a case report, in which a 42-year-old male suffered from bilateral plantar fasciitis after treatment with azithromycin for gastroenteritis.

Article Synopsis
  • Variable eligibility criteria in studies of plantar heel pain may limit the generalization of meta-analyses due to inconsistencies in participant selection.
  • A systematic review analyzed 214 studies, revealing significant variation in how age, BMI, symptom duration, and pain level were defined, with some criteria appearing in many different formats.
  • The findings suggest that the way eligibility criteria are set can influence the characteristics of participants, indicating a need for standardized criteria to improve comparability across studies.

Ego net analysis is a well-known practice in social sciences, where an ego net (EN) consists of a focal node, the ego, and its links to other nodes, called alters, and alter-alter links may also be included. An EN describes how a focal node is embedded in its interaction context. Here, I introduce EN analysis to ecology in a study of the trophic network of a sub-Antarctic land bird, Lesser Sheathbill ().
