Aims/hypothesis: The aim of this study was to describe the metabolome in diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and its association with incident CVD in type 2 diabetes, and identify prognostic biomarkers.

Methods: From a prospective cohort of individuals with type 2 diabetes, baseline sera (N=1991) were quantified for 170 metabolites using NMR spectroscopy with median 5.2 years of follow-up.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a prevalent but often underdiagnosed monogenic disorder affecting lipoprotein metabolism, and genetic testing for FH has not been widely conducted in Asia in the past. In this cross-sectional study of 31 probands (19 adults and 12 children) and an addition of 15 individuals (12 adults and 3 children), who underwent genetic testing and cascade screening for FH, respectively, during the period between February 2015 and July 2023, we identified a total of 25 distinct variants in 71.0% unrelated probands.

Article Synopsis
  • HDL particles (HDL-P) vary in size and composition, and their protective functions against cardiovascular disease (CVD) are affected by diabetes.
  • A study of 1,991 adults with type 2 diabetes found that small HDL-P were linked to lower risks of CVD and mortality, whereas very large HDL-P were associated with higher mortality risks.
  • Small HDL-P also provided valuable predictive insights for assessing risks of adverse outcomes in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

We aim to assess the long-term impact of acute kidney injury (AKI) on progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) and all-cause mortality and investigate determinants of AKI in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). A consecutive cohort of 9,096 Chinese patients with T2D from the Hong Kong Diabetes Register was followed for 12 years (mean ± SD age 57 ± 13.2 years; 46.

Rationale & Objective: Nonalbuminuric diabetic kidney disease (DKD) has become the prevailing DKD phenotype. We compared the risks of adverse outcomes among patients with this phenotype compared with other DKD phenotypes.

Study Design: Multicenter prospective cohort study.

Background: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a monogenic disorder of lipoprotein metabolism leading to an increased risk of premature cardiovascular disease. Genetic testing for FH is not commonly used in Asian countries. We aimed to define the genetic spectrum of FH in Hong Kong and to test the feasibility of cascade genetic screening.

Osteoporosis has become an important health problem in postmenopausal Asian populations as the prevalence of hip and vertebral fractures in some Asian countries has risen to approach that of Caucasian populations. Risedronate, a pyridinyl-bisphosphonate agent, is a potent inhibitor of bone resorption. Risedronate increases bone mineral density (BMD), reduces markers of bone turnover, and reduces the risk of fractures in Caucasian postmenopausal women.

The plasminogen-activating (PA) and matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) enzyme systems are implicated in proteolytic turnover of the extracellular matrix (ECM) associated with biologic processes including wound healing, inflammation and angiogenesis. Aberrant expression of components of the PA and MMP enzyme systems occurs in the pathogenesis of metastatic cancer. Oxamflatin (Ox), a novel hydroxamic acid derivative, inhibits u-PA mRNA expression and proteolytic activity while simultaneously upregulating the expression of the natural inhibitor of u-PA, plasminogen activator inhibitor type 2 (PAI-2) in metastatic cancer cells.
