Nodular lesions on the soft palate and edema in the oral cavity were observed macroscopically. Microscopically, a granuloma with multiple layers of necrosis interspersed with inflammatory polymorphonuclear infiltrates was observed.

Anticoagulation strategies in COVID-19 infected patients receiving ECMO support.

Background: Hospitalized COVID-19 patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure may deteriorate despite invasive mechanical ventilation and thus require extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. Unfractionated heparin (UFH) is the antithrombotic of choice, however, bivalirudin may offer more predictable pharmacokinetics resulting in consistent anticoagulant effects with lower bleeding and thrombotic occurrences. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the daily challenges nursing home (NH) staff face caring for the residents living with Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (). Operationalizing Stakeholder Engagement Through the Stakeholder-Centric Engagement Charter (SCEC).

There is a need for clear strategies and procedures to operationalize stakeholder engagement in research studies. Clear guidelines that promote shared leadership among study investigators and research stakeholders are important for inclusive and sustainable partnerships. Such guidelines may take the form of a governance charter and can be a means for encouraging the participation and inclusion of stakeholders who may have little to no experience with research or are otherwise underrepresented in research.

In-kitchen aerosol exposure in twelve cities across the globe.

Poor ventilation and polluting cooking fuels in low-income homes cause high exposure, yet relevant global studies are limited. We assessed exposure to in-kitchen particulate matter (PM and PM) employing similar instrumentation in 60 low-income homes across 12 cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh); Chennai (India); Nanjing (China); Medellín (Colombia); São Paulo (Brazil); Cairo (Egypt); Sulaymaniyah (Iraq); Addis Ababa (Ethiopia); Akure (Nigeria); Blantyre (Malawi); Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania) and Nairobi (Kenya). Exposure profiles of kitchen occupants showed that fuel, kitchen volume, cooking type and ventilation were the most prominent factors affecting in-kitchen exposure.

Evaluating Stakeholder Engagement: Stakeholder-Centric Instrumentation Process (SCIP).

Evaluating engagement in a research partnership can capture the success and impact of the research team-stakeholder partnerships. This article describes the Stakeholder-Centric Instrumentation Process (SCIP), an iterative method to develop an evaluation that reflects research team-stakeholder collective values, language, and priorities. We describe our implementation of the SCIP and provide the Stakeholder-Centric Engagement Evaluation, an evaluation developed in collaboration with our advisory committee.

We conducted a scoping review of recent approaches for evaluating engagement in research and present a descriptive overview of our findings. We searched peer-reviewed journal articles published worldwide in English between January 2013 and June 2018.

This study examined post-acute care (PAC) rehabilitation practitioner's perspectives on communication. This is a secondary data analysis of a larger qualitative study, which included PAC rehabilitation provider ( = 99) focus groups that were held in a purposive sample of 13 skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). Participants emphasized the importance of bidirectional communication between rehabilitation and nursing.

Developing Occupation-Based Preventive Programs for Late-Middle-Aged Latino Patients in Safety-Net Health Systems.

Latino adults between ages 50 and 60 yr are at high risk for developing chronic conditions that can lead to early disability. We conducted a qualitative pilot study with 11 Latinos in this demographic group to develop a foundational schema for the design of health promotion programs that could be implemented by occupational therapy practitioners in primary care settings for this population. One-on-one interviews addressing routines and activities, health management, and health care utilization were conducted, audiotaped, and transcribed.

Language Discordance and Patient- Centered Care in Occupational Therapy: A Case Study.

The accumulative burden of a growing non-English speaking minority population and health disparities in the United States demonstrate the urgency of examining occupational therapy practices and defining care that is timely, effective, safe, and patient-centered. In this context, we investigate an occupational therapy episode of care from the perspectives of patient, caregiver, and primary occupational therapy care provider. Treatment sessions were observed and one-on-one semistructured interviews were conducted with the participants.

Regiodivergent halogenation of vinylogous esters: one-pot, transition-metal-free access to differentiated haloresorcinols.

We report an efficient method for the regiodivergent synthesis of halogenated resorcinol derivatives using readily available vinylogous esters and sulfonyl halide halogen donors. Either the 4- or 6-haloresorcinol isomer is accessible from a common precursor. In contrast to conventional oxidants for arene halogenation, mild sulfonyl halides allow broad functional group compatibility.
