Objective: Computer-tailored and Internet-based interventions to promote physical activity behavior have shown some promise, but only few have been tested among African Americans. We examined the feasibility and efficacy of three 1-year, multiple contact physical activity interventions (Tailored Internet, Tailored Print, Standard Internet) in a subsample of African American participants (n = 38) enrolled in a randomized controlled trial.
Materials And Methods: Participants randomly assigned to Tailored Internet and Print programs received individually tailored computer expert system feedback delivered via Internet or print.
Background: Tobacco smoking remains the leading preventable cause of death among American women. Exercise has shown promise as an aid to smoking cessation because it reduces weight gain and weight concerns, improves affect, and reduces nicotine withdrawal symptoms and cigarette craving. Studies have shown that the practice of yoga improves weight control, and reduces perceived stress and negative affect.

Four HCN channel subunits (HCN1-4) have previously been cloned. The aim of the current study was to investigate the immunoreactivity of HCN4 channel protein in rat trigeminal (TG) and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory neurons.

Overall the results indicated that the increase in annual total phosphorus loads attributable to climate change was greater than that from either population or land use change, and therefore that future climate variability will pose an increasingly significant threat to the successful long-term implementation of catchment management initiatives. The seasonal pattern in projected P export mirrored changes in streamflow, with higher rates between January and April and lower rates in summer.

It is essential that any measures taken to conserve individual species and their constituent populations against climate-mediated declines are appropriate. The release of captive bred animals to augment wild populations is a widespread management strategy for many species but has proven controversial.

Their increased activity has recently been demonstrated in models of nerve injury-induced pain. The major aim of the current study was to investigate altered HCN channel protein expression in trigeminal sensory neurons following inflammation of the dura.

The voltammetric ion-transfer response was found to be dependent on the pH and ionic strength of the aqueous phase solution and also on the nature of the organic phase electrolyte anion. The current-pH behaviour of HEWL was dominated by the charge of the biomolecule at each pH, as indicated by the close relationship between the experimental peak currents and the theoretical curve for HEWL based on its known acid-base chemistry.

Spring temperatures have increased in western Europe over the past 30 years in line with reported global warming. These have been shown, at least in part, to be responsible for changes in the timing of life cycle events (phenology) of plants and animals.

Of particular interest are biomarkers of treatment-related effects which are detectable in easily accessible biological fluids such as blood. A fundamental challenge in such biomarker studies is selecting among the plethora of biomolecular changes induced by a compound and revealed by molecular profiling, to identify biomarkers which are exclusively or predominantly due to specific processes.

Although it is generally understood that informed consent is a necessary prerequisite to research participation, it is less clear how to proceed when potential research participants lack the capacity to provide this informed consent. The rationale for assessing the assent or dissent of vulnerable individuals and obtaining informed consent by authorized representatives is discussed.

The aim of the present study was to quantitatively examine the distribution of P2X2 and P2X3 receptors in primary afferent cell bodies in the rat trigeminal ganglion, including those innervating the dura. In order to determine the classes of neurons that express these receptor subtypes, purine receptor immunoreactivity was examined for colocalization with markers of myelinated (neurofilament 200; NF200) or mostly unmyelinated, non-peptidergic fibers (Bandeiraea simplicifolia isolectin B4; IB4).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFIonotropic purine receptors (P2X) have been implicated in nociceptive neurotransmission. In this study, we examine the actions of the P2X receptor agonist alpha, beta methylene adenosine 5'-triphosphate on excitatory neurotransmission in neurons in the deep and superficial laminae of the trigeminal spinal subnucleus caudalis (Vc), which receives nociceptive inputs from the craniofacial region. Alpha, beta methylene adenosine 5'-triphosphate caused an increase in spontaneous excitatory neurotransmission (miniature excitatory postsynaptic currents) in neurons in deep but not superficial laminae of Vc; this effect could be inhibited by the P2X receptor antagonist 2,3-O-2,4,6-trinitrophenyl-ATP.

Here, genetic and phenotypic analyses were employed to determine the relationship of Bacillus strain JF-2 to other Bacillus strains. The restriction patterns with AluI and analysis of gyrA and 16S rRNA gene sequences grouped Bacillus strain JF-2 with B.

Comparative genomics has recently been used to identify potential cis-regulatory sequences within the yeast genome on the basis of phylogenetic conservation, but this information alone does not reveal if or when transcriptional regulators occupy these binding sites. We have constructed an initial map of yeast's transcriptional regulatory code by identifying the sequence elements that are bound by regulators under various conditions and that are conserved among Saccharomyces species.

The landfarm was monitored for two years for aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, soil gases indicative of microbial activity, and for changes in the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH).

Successful deployment of a bioethanol process depends on the integration of technologies that can be economically commercialized. Pretreatment and fermentation operations of the traditional enzymatic bioethanol-production process constitute the largest portion of the capital and operating costs. Cost reduction in these areas, through improved reactions and reduced capital, will improve the economic feasibility of a large-scale plant.

Vitamin D metabolites 1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) and 24R,25(OH)(2)D(3) regulate endochondral ossification in a cell maturation-dependent manner via membrane-mediated mechanisms. 24R,25(OH)(2)D(3) stimulates PKC activity in chondrocytes from the growth plate resting zone, whereas 1alpha,25(OH)(2)D(3) stimulates PKC in growth zone chondrocytes. We used the rat costochondral growth plate cartilage cell model to study how these responses are differentially regulated.
