Outcomes of immediate facial nerve reanimation with nerve transfer for facial nerve neoplasm-induced paralysis: a retrospective review.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of our polyneural, zone-based reanimation approach for patients with neoplasm-induced facial paralysis.

Methods: A retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent facial reanimation surgery using multiple donor nerve transfers was undertaken. In each case, the selection of donor nerves was based on the availability of donor nerve and the viability of the motor endplate on the affected side.

Contralesional High-Acceleration Vestibulo-Ocular Reflex Function in Vestibular Schwannoma.

Unlabelled: Impairment of ipsilesional vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) function is well described in vestibular schwannoma (VS) and a correlation between gain of the VOR and tumor size has been suggested. Bilateral VOR impairment may also occur in VS patients, but its mechanisms are poorly understood. We sought to explore the effect of unilateral VS on ipsilesional and contralesional high-acceleration VOR function using video head impulse testing, and evaluate potential factors responsible for contralesional VOR impairment.

Physiology of Osseointegration.

"Bone conduction implant devices rely on osseointegration of titanium implants with the underlying skull, characterized by endosseous healing and de-novo bone formation both surrounding and onto the implant surface. The key steps in osseointegration are the initial tissue response to implantation, peri-implant osteogenesis, and peri-implant bone remodeling. There is increasing evidence that osseointegration is primarily an immune-mediated process with the key players being the complement cascade and macrophages, which form part of the host innate immunity.

The current management of acute uncomplicated appendicitis: should there be a change in paradigm? A systematic review of the literatures and analysis of treatment performance.

Introduction: Appendectomy has long been the mainstay of intervention for acute appendicitis, aiming at preventing perforation, peritonitis, abscess formation and recurrence. With better understanding of the disease process, non-operative management (NOM) with antibiotics alone has been proved a feasible treatment for uncomplicated appendicitis. This article aimed at systematically reviewing the available literatures and discussing the question whether NOM should replace appendectomy as the standard first-line treatment for uncomplicated appendicitis.
