A comprehensive cohort study including an entomological surveillance component can contribute to our knowledge of clinical aspects and transmission patterns of arbovirosis. This article describes the implementation of a populational-based birth cohort study that included an entomological surveillance component, and its associated challenges in a low-income community of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The participants were recruited in two periods: from 2012 to 2014, and from 2015 to 2017.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: To characterize the participatory and democratic creation of the Brazilian guidelines for biorepositories and biobanks of human biological material with the purpose of research based on the ethical principles of human dignity, autonomy, beneficence, justice, and precaution.
Methods: An interdisciplinary work group was constituted to prepare the document, considering the following criteria: experience in biobank operation, regional representation, type of stored biological material, and bioethics specialists. Members of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Agência Nacional de Vigilância Sanitária - ANVISA), also participated due to their regulatory competence.
Informed consent is recognized as a primary ethical requirement to conduct research involving humans. In the investigations with the use of human biological material, informed consent (IC) assumes a differentiated condition on account of the many future possibilities. This work presents suitable alternatives for IC regarding the storage and use of human biological material in research, according to new Brazilian regulations.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFNeonatal hypoxia-ischemia (HI) has been extensively studied in a rat model characterized by unilateral brain damage (Rice-Vannucci Model). However, as well as in humans, each rat brain hemisphere is distinctly involved in cognitive functions, as for example retrieval of emotionally based memory, and neurochemical asymmetries have been described. In this paper we investigated whether hypoxia-ischemia could cause distinct cognitive deficits depending on which hemisphere is damaged.
