Mobility for critically ill patients has been found to be safe, beneficial, and feasible, although a culture of immobility prevails in many adult intensive care units (ICU) because of staffing challenges and lack of physical therapy and occupational therapy involvement. Clinical practice guidelines recommended early mobility for ICU patients to improve long- and short-term outcomes. Addition of a mobility team to the licensed physical therapy and occupational therapy staff and interprofessional ICU team improved patient outcomes and staff satisfaction, and reduced facility cost related to employee injuries.

Objective: The purpose of this analysis is to present incidence rates of exposure to blood among paramedics in the United States by selected variables and to compare all percutaneous exposure rates among different types of healthcare workers.

Methods: A survey on blood exposure was mailed in 2002-2003 to a national sample of paramedics. Results for California paramedics were analyzed with the national sample and also separately.

Background: Paramedics are at risk for human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus infection from occupational blood exposure. This study examined how often paramedics are provided with personal protective equipment (PPE), sharps containers, and selected safety devices by their employers; the frequency with which paramedics use sharps containers and these safety devices; and paramedics' attitudes regarding this equipment.

Objective: We sought to examine the costs of transferring one through five embryos per in vitro fertilization cycle from each of three perspectives: society, the infertile couple, and the insurer.

Methods: Data from the 2003 Assisted Reproductive Technology Report was used to create Markov decision analytic models stratified by maternal age subgroup. We modeled both total costs, cost-effectiveness (cost per live birth), and clinical outcomes: multiple births, preterm deliveries, and cerebral palsy.

The cortex of the human midgestation adrenals comprises a thin layer of cells, the definitive zone (DZ) that surrounds the larger, inner fetal zone (FZ). CD56 expression was observed by immunohistochemistry on DZ cells and isolated groups of cells within the FZ. CD56 mRNA expression also was detected among DZ cells but not selected sections of FZ cells isolated by laser capture microdissection.
