Little is known about the magnitude of the effects of lead shot ingestion alone or combined with poisons (e.g., in bait or seeds/granules containing pesticides) on population size, growth, and extinction of non-waterbird avian species that ingest these substances.

Background: Matrix metalloproteinases contribute to tissue remodeling, and endogenous control of MMP activity is achieved by the concordant release and binding of TIMPs. Animal models of MI have demonstrated a role for MMP activation in myocardial remodeling.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that acute disruption of fibrillar collagen will decrease myocardial systolic performance without changing cardiomyocyte contractility. Isolated papillary muscles were treated either with plasmin (0.64 U/ml, 240 min) or untreated and served as same animal control.
