Venous leg ulcers are a prevalent nonhealing wound of the lower extremity. Although topically applied growth factors successfully improve wound repair in animal studies, similar studies on humans with venous leg ulcers have not been successful. This study was designed to evaluate the acute safety and biologic feasibility of peri-ulcer injection of a replication-incompetent adenoviral construct expressing platelet-derived growth factor-beta (PDGF-beta).

We report the in vitro inhibition of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) by a bacteriocin-like inhibitory substance (BLIS-like substance) produced by Streptococcus salivarius (S. salivarius).

Imagery vividness and perceived anxious arousal in prolonged exposure treatment for PTSD.

The present paper examines imagery vividness and anxiety during Prolonged Exposure (PE) for chronic PTSD among 69 female survivors of sexual or nonsexual assault. All participants received between 9 and 12 individual sessions of either PE alone or in combination with cognitive restructuring. As hypothesized, vividness and anxiety ratings from early imaginal exposure sessions were moderately to highly correlated, but these correlations decreased in later sessions.

The relationship between obsessive-compulsive and posttraumatic stress symptoms in clinical and non-clinical samples.

Validity of patient self-reported history of skin cancer.

Objective: To determine the validity of patient self-report of skin cancer history.

Design: A cohort of patients was randomly selected from the case group in a prior case-control study involving skin cancer, and a second cohort was randomly selected from the controls of that study. Patient self-reported history (as determined by responses to a survey) was compared with the gold standard of chart documentation of a pathology report or a procedure note from Mohs micrographic surgery demonstrating skin cancer.

The lack of a relationship between atopic dermatitis and nonmelanoma skin cancers.

Background: Very little has been published on whether a relationship exists between atopic dermatitis (AD) and skin cancer.

Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate whether individuals with AD are more likely than other patients with dermatologic conditions to develop nonmelanoma skin cancer.

Methods: This was a case-control, mailed-survey study.

Mail surveys can achieve high response rates in a dermatology patient population.

In order to understand the burden of skin disease on patient populations, researchers need to be able to measure exposures and outcomes of interest in a population-based study. One method of obtaining such information is mailed patient surveys. This method of obtaining information, however, raises concerns regarding possible low response rates, and to the best of our knowledge, this method has not been attempted in large dermatology patient populations with a high response rate.

Internal hernia formation after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass for morbid obesity.

There is mounting concern that internal hernia formation after laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) for morbid obesity remains unrecognized until complications develop. In this report we present our experience with this complication. Out of 100 patients who underwent LRYGB we identified five patients who were diagnosed with postoperative internal hernia formation.

Increased survival of persons with tuberculosis and human immunodeficiency virus infection, 1991--2000.

To determine factors associated with the occurrence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and tuberculosis (TB) disease (HIV-TB) and the associated survival rate, we analyzed patients with HIV-TB at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia, from 1991 through 2000. Overall, 644 patients with HIV-TB were seen. The number of HIV-TB cases per year was highest in 1992 (102 cases) and declined to 39 cases in 2000.
