Plasmodium falciparum typically manifests as a severe, symptomatic infection due to the high parasitemia and increased adherence of infected cells to blood vessel endothelium. However, there have been previous reports of P. falciparum recrudescence months to years after exposure.

Hematological malignancies exhibit many clinical presentations, from ambiguous systemic symptoms to rapid multi-organ failure. By identifying common clinical, laboratory, and autopsy findings in patients with a hematological malignancy, living patients may be diagnosed and treated earlier. We retrospectively reviewed our institution's 2003-2013 autopsy and respective medical records for patients with a hematological malignancy.

Article Synopsis
  • Loperamide is an over-the-counter antidiarrheal drug that, when taken in high doses, can affect the brain's opioid receptors, leading to dangerous effects like euphoria and respiratory depression.
  • A young man with a history of drug abuse was found dead, and the autopsy revealed no significant findings except for indications of loperamide toxicity.
  • Toxicological analysis confirmed he had over six times the therapeutic level of loperamide in his system, resulting in his death being attributed to its toxic effects combined with other drugs.

Asian, Siberian, and American ginseng are known to interfere with serum digoxin measurements using fluorescence polarization technology, Digoxin II and Digoxin III assays (Abbott Laboratories, Green oaks, IL) as well as other digoxin assays. Abbott Laboratories more recently launched two new digoxin assays: iDigoxin, a chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay for application on the ARCHITECT i1000SR and i2000SR immunoassay analyzers, and cDigoxin, a particle-enhanced turbidimetric inhibition immunoassay for application on the ARCHITECT c4000, c8000, and c1600 clinical chemistry analyzers; and we studied potential interferences of ginsengs with these two assays in vitro. When aliquots of drug-free serum pool treated with activated charcoal were supplemented with extracts of various ginsengs, no significant apparent digoxin values were observed.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare and aggressive lymphoid neoplasm. It can involve the kidney, either by direct lymphomatous infiltration or by a paraneoplastic glomerulonephritis. We present here the case of a man with rectal bleeding and rapidly progressive renal failure, who had MCL in the gastrointestinal tract and paraneoplastic membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, and whose renal dysfunction normalised after chemotherapy.

Objectives: To find a suitable method for detecting zinc sulfate in adulterated urine.

Methods: Two rapid spot tests to detect the presence of zinc sulfate in urine were developed.

Results: Addition of 3 to 4 drops of 1N sodium hydroxide solution to approximately 1 mL of urine containing zinc sulfate led to the formation of a white precipitate, which was soluble in excess sodium hydroxide.
