Different populations of hypothalamic kisspeptin (KISS1) neurons located in the rostral periventricular area of the third ventricle (RP3V) and arcuate nucleus (ARC) are thought to generate the sex-specific patterns of gonadotropin secretion. These neuronal populations integrate gonadal sex steroid feedback with internal and external cues relayed via the actions of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides. The excitatory amino acid neurotransmitter glutamate, the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain, plays a role in regulating gonadotropin secretion, at least partially through engaging KISS1 signaling.

The increased vulnerability to stress-induced neuropsychiatric disorders in women, including anxiety disorders, does not emerge until pubertal onset, suggesting a role for ovarian hormones in organizing sex-specific vulnerability to anxiety. Parvalbumin (PV) interneurons in the prefrontal cortex are a potential target for these ovarian hormones. PV+ interneurons undergo maturation during the adolescent period and have been shown to be sensitive to stress and to mediate stress-induced anxiety in female mice.

The literature describing the relative leadership styles and strengths of women versus men is mixed and virtually all research comes from sectors outside of public health. The purpose of this qualitative study is to identify specific leadership skills and characteristics in women who have successfully created change predominantly within the food and physical activity environments in their communities and beyond.
