Background: The objective of this study was to identify risk factors associated with intestinal anastomotic leakage in order to practically assist in surgical decision making.

Methods: A retrospective review of an academic surgery database was performed over 5 years to identify patients who had intestinal (small bowel and colon) anastomoses to determine independent predictors of anastomotic leakage.

Results: Over the study period, 682 patients were identified with intestinal anastomoses; the overall leak rate was 5.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the treatment of diabetic neuropathic foot ulcers, highlighting a focus on limb revascularization over effective ulcer management.
  • Analysis of 917 cases showed that significant predictors of better outcomes included healing of the ulcer, with a notable distinction in long-term survival and limb preservation rates between non-ischemic and ischemic patients.
  • The findings suggest a need to reconsider the current emphasis on surgery, as ulcer healing is a critical factor for improving patient survival and independence.
