In sub-Saharan Africa, the World Health Organization recommends routinely screening AIDS patients with a CD4 count ≤100 cells/µL for cryptococcal infection. In the United States, there are no recommendations for routine screening.

The worldwide burden of CM among persons living with HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) was estimated in 2009 to be 957,900 cases, with approximately 624,700 deaths annually.
