Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how genetic and non-genetic factors impact gene expression in bronchial epithelial cells relevant to COVID-19 susceptibility, particularly focusing on the ACE2 gene linked to the virus.
  • Researchers analyzed RNA-sequencing data from uninfected smokers and asthma patients to explore the relationship between ACE2 expression and various health factors, such as obesity and hypertension.
  • Findings suggest that higher ACE2 expression correlates with smoking and certain health conditions, and that a suppressed immune response in the airways during early SARS-CoV-2 infection may contribute to increased COVID-19 risk for individuals with these conditions.

Common variable immunodeficiency is a rare disorder of immunity associated with a myriad of clinical manifestations including recurrent infections, autoimmunity, and malignancy. Though rare, neurologic complications have been described in a small number of case reports and case series of CVID patients. In this article, we present a patient with CVID who suffered significant neurologic morbidity and categorize the reported range of neurologic complications associated with CVID.

Alkoxide-bridged disilver cations react with dihydrogen to form hydride-bridged cations, releasing free alcohol. Hydrogenolysis of neutral silver fluorides affords hydride-bridged disilver cations as their bifluoride salts. These reactions proceed most efficiently when the supporting ligands are expanded N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) derived from 6- and 7-membered cyclic amidinium salts.

The G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) Proteolysis Site (GPS) of cell-adhesion GPCRs and polycystic kidney disease (PKD) proteins constitutes a highly conserved autoproteolysis sequence, but its catalytic mechanism remains unknown. Here, we show that unexpectedly the ∼40-residue GPS motif represents an integral part of a much larger ∼320-residue domain that we termed GPCR-Autoproteolysis INducing (GAIN) domain. Crystal structures of GAIN domains from two distantly related cell-adhesion GPCRs revealed a conserved novel fold in which the GPS motif forms five β-strands that are tightly integrated into the overall GAIN domain.

BRCA1 contributes to the response to UV irradiation. Utilizing its BRCT motifs, it is recruited during S/G2 to UV-damaged sites in a DNA replication-dependent but nucleotide excision repair (NER)-independent manner. More specifically, at UV-stalled replication forks, it promotes photoproduct excision, suppression of translesion synthesis, and the localization and activation of replication factor C complex (RFC) subunits.

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the gold standard for the treatment of left main disease, whereas percutaneous coronary intervention is a viable option for patients who are candidates for revascularization but ineligible for CABG. CABG is limited by extended hospital stay followed by rehabilitation and mediocre long-term patency of saphenous vein grafts. Drug-eluting stents decrease the restenosis rates compared with bare metal stents and provide comparable clinical outcomes with those of CABG.
