Prevalence of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli and impact on child health in Cap-Haitien, Haiti.

Background: Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) are common pathogens infecting children during their growth and development. Determining the epidemiology and the impact of DEC on child anthropometric measures informs prioritization of prevention efforts. These relationships were evaluated in a novel setting, Cap-Haitien, Haiti.

Plasma mineral status after a six-month intervention providing one egg per day to young Malawian children: a randomized controlled trial.

Mineral deficiencies are common in children living in low-resource areas. Eggs are a rich source of essential nutrients and have been shown to improve growth in young children, although little is known about their impact on mineral status. Children aged 6-9 months (n = 660) were randomized to receive either one egg/day for 6-months or no intervention.

Choline, DHA, and Diarrheal Disease Associated with Growth Faltering in a Case-Control Study.

Background: Children with recurrent infectious diarrhea are susceptible to growth faltering. DHA and choline may play a role in this relationship due to their involvement in lipid metabolism, gut immunity, and inflammatory pathways.

Objectives: This study aimed to characterize the contributions made by DHA and choline status and enteric damage in young children in the association between diarrheal illness and child growth.

Grandi Byen-supporting child growth and development through integrated, responsive parenting, nutrition and hygiene: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Poor child growth and development outcomes stem from complex relationships encompassing biological, behavioral, social, and environmental conditions. However, there is a dearth of research on integrated approaches targeting these interwoven factors. The Grandi Byen study seeks to fill this research gap through a three-arm longitudinal randomized controlled trial which will evaluate the impact of an integrated nutrition, responsive parenting, and WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) intervention on holistic child growth and development.

Case Report: The Association of Wilson Disease in a Patient With Ataxia and GLUT-1 Deficiency.

Wilson disease (WD) and glucose transporter type 1 (GLUT1) deficiency syndrome are two syndromes with different modes of inheritance but share certain similarities on neurological presentation. To date we have not found previous reports of an association between these two disorders. Here we describe a 9-year-old male with global developmental delay that presented with intermittent and sudden onset weakness that first occurred at age 3.

The Negative Impact of Anemia in Outcome from Traumatic Brain Injury.

Background: Whether anemia complicating traumatic brain injury (TBI) has an impact on patient outcomes is controversial; therefore, recommendations for blood transfusions for such patients are inconsistent. We hypothesized that patient outcome after TBI would be worse in patients with lower hemoglobin levels.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed records of patients with TBI and head Abbreviated Injury Scale >3 with abnormal head computed tomography findings and neurologic injury.
