Parental supply of alcohol to adolescents is associated with increased risk of subsequent adolescent alcohol use and harms, so identifying factors associated with parents' decision-making is critical. This study examined how parental supply is associated with attitudes toward adolescent alcohol use, perceived norms of parental supply, perceived behavioural control and perceived acceptable age to drink alcohol. A total of 1197 Australian parents with children aged 12-17 years completed an online cross-sectional survey assessing their parental supply behaviours, attitudes and perceptions in April 2022.

It remains unclear whether feedback from group III/IV muscle afferents is of continuous significance for regulating the pulmonary response during prolonged (>5 min), steady-state exercise. To elucidate the influence of these sensory neurons on hyperpnoea, gas exchange efficiency, arterial oxygenation and acid-base balance during prolonged locomotor exercise, 13 healthy participants (4 females; 21 (3) years, : 46 (8) ml/kg/min) performed consecutive constant-load cycling bouts at ∼50% (20 min), ∼75% (20 min) and ∼100% (5 min) of with intact (CTRL) and pharmacologically attenuated (lumbar intrathecal fentanyl; FENT) group III/IV muscle afferent feedback from the legs. Pulmonary responses were continuously recorded and arterial blood (radial catheter) periodically collected throughout the exercise.

Background: Myocardial injury after a hip fracture is common and has a poor prognosis. Patients with a hip fracture and myocardial injury may benefit from accelerated surgery to remove the physiological stress associated with the hip fracture. This study aimed to determine if accelerated surgery is superior to standard care in terms of the 90-day risk of death in patients with a hip fracture who presented with an elevated cardiac biomarker/enzyme measurement at hospital arrival.

Article Synopsis
  • Zero-alcohol beverages (0.0-0.5% alcohol) might help reduce overall alcohol consumption if used as substitutes for traditional alcoholic drinks, but they raise concerns about attracting adolescents to alcohol and increasing exposure to branding.
  • A study with 38 parents of teens aged 12-17 revealed that while some parents viewed these beverages as adult options that could promote healthier drinking habits, they believed they were unnecessary for adolescents and could normalize alcohol use.
  • Parents expressed mixed feelings about allowing zero-alcohol drinks for their kids, with worries about possible negative consequences, indicating a need for targeted public health messaging about the risks associated with these products.

Objective: Zero-alcohol beverages (<0.5% alcohol by volume) appear and taste similar to alcoholic beverages but are regulated similarly to soft drinks in many countries, blurring the distinction between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. How parents view provision of zero-alcohol beverages to adolescents is likely a key determinant of adolescent consumption.

Objectives: The Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is described as more contagious than previous variants. We sought to assess risk to health care workers (HCWs) caring for patients with COVID-19 in surgical/obstetrical settings, and the perception of risk among this group.

Methods: From January to April 2022, reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 viral ribonucleic acid in patient, environmental (floor, equipment, passive air) samples, and HCWs' masks (inside surface) during urgent surgery or obstetrical delivery for patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Marine fjords along the northern Labrador coast of Arctic Canada are influenced by freshwater, nutrients, and sediment inputs from ice fields and rivers. These ecosystems, further shaped by both Atlantic and Arctic water masses, are important habitats for fishes, marine mammals, seabirds, and marine invertebrates and are vital to the Labrador Inuit who have long depended on these areas for sustenance. Despite their ecological and socio-cultural importance, these marine ecosystems remain largely understudied.

Article Synopsis
  • About 50% of cancer patients experience pain related to the disease and its treatments, with opioids and neuropathic medications as the standard treatments despite their side effects.
  • Neuromodulation techniques, such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS), dorsal root ganglion stimulation (DRGS), and peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS), are gaining traction as alternative treatments for cancer pain, particularly in chest wall pain cases.
  • In a review of 11 case reports involving 34 patients, 88.25% found meaningful pain relief with neuromodulation, and most could reduce or eliminate their opioid use, suggesting that this approach warrants further clinical investigation.

Objective: Lead migration is the most commonly reported complication of spinal cord stimulation (SCS) procedures and lead migration during trials of SCS can compromise both the success of the trial as well as the efficacy of subsequent implantation. Our objective was to examine the incidence and degree of intra-trial SCS lead migration and our hypothesis was that there would be a higher rate of significant radiographic lead migration during SCS trial than what has been previously published for permanently implanted leads.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively assessed the radiographic location of SCS leads on final fluoroscopic imaging at the time of trial lead placement compared to thoracic radiographs obtained at the end of the SCS trial to quantify the rate and degree of migration during the trial.

Background: The exposure risks to front-line health care workers caring for patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection undergoing surgery or obstetric delivery are unclear, and an understanding of sample types that may harbour virus is important for evaluating risk. We sought to determine whether SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA from patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection undergoing surgery or obstetric delivery was present in the peritoneal cavity of male and female patients, in the female reproductive tract, in the environment of the surgery or delivery suite (surgical instruments or equipment used, air or floors), and inside the masks of the attending health care workers.

Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study from November 2020 to May 2021 at 2 tertiary academic Toronto hospitals, during urgent surgeries or obstetric deliveries for patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection.
