Arginase 2 (ARG2) is a binuclear manganese metalloenzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of L-arginine. The dysregulated expression of ARG2 within specific tumor microenvironments generates an immunosuppressive niche that effectively renders the tumor 'invisible' to the host's immune system. Increased ARG2 expression leads to a concomitant depletion of local L-arginine levels, which in turn leads to suppression of anti-tumor T-cell-mediated immune responses.

Innovative approaches to develop flavors with high sensory appeal are critical in encouraging increased consumer preference and adoption of low sodium foods. Gas chromatography-olfactometry, coupled with stable isotope dilution assays and sensory experiments, led to the identification of the odorants responsible for an enhancement in saltiness perception of chicken broth prepared with thermally treated enzymatically hydrolyzed mushroom protein and cysteine, then reacted under kitchen-like cooking conditions. Comparative aroma extract dilution analysis revealed 36 odorants with flavor dilution factors between a range of 1 and 256.

Doxorubicin is a chemotherapeutic agent that is commonly used to treat a broad range of cancers. However, significant cardiotoxicity, associated with prolonged exposure to doxorubicin, limits its continued therapeutic use. Exosomes are extracellular vesicles that mediate cell-to-cell communication by transferring biological cargo, such as DNA, RNA and proteins. Through genetic engineering of exosome-producing cells or manipulation of purified exosomes, it is possible to load exosomes with therapeutic molecules and target them to specific cells via the display of targeting moieties on their surface. This provides an opportunity to exploit a naturally-occurring biological process for therapeutic purposes.

Rationale: Cochlear Implant (CI) candidates with a ski-slope hearing loss may be outside current implantation criteria [< 50% on Bamford-Kowal-Bench (BKB) sentence testing], despite having a significant hearing disability and limited benefit from conventional amplification.

Aim: To use existing post-operative performance data to establish a criterion for Arthur Boothroyd (AB) word test for CI candidacy assessment.

Methodology: Retrospective analysis of post-operative AB words scores for 64 CI users was performed and the 10th percentile score selected as a criterion of reasonable chance for post-operative improvement.

Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbations are associated with human rhinovirus (HRV) lung infections for which there are no current effective antiviral therapies. To date, HRV infectivity of cells in vitro has been measured by a variety of biochemical and immunological methods. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to show how the implementation of the European Working Time Directive in August 2004 has dramatically decreased junior doctors' working hours, as a consequence of which new ways of working will need to be found. Traditionally both doctors and nurses record the same generic history (past medical history, social and family history, drug history and allergies) in their own notes. A fifteen-month-old boy, born to consanguineously married couple, presented with asymptomatic hepatomegaly. Investigations revealed mildly deranged liver functions, necroinflammatory changes and cirrhosis on liver biopsy, a markedly raised alpha feto protein and tyrosine levels in plasma and a generalized aminoaciduria. The anaphylatoxic peptide C3a is a pro-inflammatory mediator generated during complement activation, whose specific G protein coupled receptor is expressed on granulocytes, monocytes, mast cells, activated lymphocytes, and in the nervous tissue. We have generated RBL-2H3 cell clones stably expressing mutants of the human C3a-receptor (C3aR) with combined alanine (Ala) substitutions of ten C-terminal serine (Ser) or threonine (Thr) residues, which may represent putative phosphorylation sites to characterize their role in ligand-induced C3aR internalization and signaling. Ser475/479 and Thr480/481 as well as Ser449 seemed not to be involved in ligand-induced receptor internalization.

HSP47 is a molecular chaperone that plays an unknown role during the assembly and transport of procollagen. Our previous studies showed that, unlike most chaperones, HSP47 interacts with a correctly folded substrate. We suggested that HSP47 either stabilizes the correctly folded collagen helix from heat denaturation or prevents lateral aggregation prior to its transport from the endoplasmic reticulum.
