There are instances where hospitals may experience a relative shortage of oxygen, for example, future pandemics, natural disasters or wartime. We developed a modification to a domiciliary ventilator that captures oxygen normally vented during expiration into the atmosphere, delivering it to the patient. The modification significantly increases PaO in mechanically ventilated patients at their baseline FiO and baseline FiO +1, +2 and +3 L/min compared to no modification.

Objective: To identify factors associated with incident alcohol consumption, hazardous drinking, alcohol-related problems, and substance use up to 8 years following metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) during adolescence.

We have been able to induce a series of lactonisation reactions of unsaturated acids using a carbocationic intermediate formed . The transformation generates five and six membered lactone rings AND forms a new exocyclic C-C bond at the same time, thus removing the need for further derivatisation of typical lactonisation products (such as from iodo lactonisation). The reaction is operationally straightforward, does not employ any metals and utilises readily accessible alcohol and unsaturated acid substrates.

Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies that bind their cognate antigen in a pH-dependent manner (acid-switched antibodies) can release their bound antigen for degradation in the acidic environment of endosomes, while the IgGs are rescued by the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn). Thus, such IgGs can neutralize multiple antigens over time and therefore be used at lower doses than their non-pH-responsive counterparts. Here, we show that light-chain shuffling combined with phage display technology can be used to discover IgG1 antibodies with increased pH-dependent antigen binding properties, using the snake venom toxins, myotoxin II and α-cobratoxin, as examples.
