Background: Recessed mini-glenoid components provide an alternative to total shoulder replacement that may avoid some of the known shortcomings and complications associated with shoulder hemiarthroplasty or standard glenoid components in difficult cases. This study reports survivorship, radiological and clinical outcomes of a recessed mini-glenoid implant in a consecutive cohort.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study reporting outcomes of 28 consecutive shoulders (27 patients) following total shoulder replacement using a recessed, cemented mini-glenoid implant at two sites.

The recent outbreaks of Zika virus (ZIKV) in flavivirus-endemic regions highlight the need for sensitive and specific serological tests. Previously we and others reported key fusion loop (FL) residues and/or BC loop (BCL) residues on dengue virus (DENV) envelope protein recognized by flavivirus cross-reactive human monoclonal antibodies and polyclonal sera. To improve ZIKV serodiagnosis, we employed wild type (WT) and FL or FL/BCL mutant virus-like particles (VLP) of ZIKV, DENV1 and West Nile virus (WNV) in enzyme linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), and tested convalescent-phase serum or plasma samples from reverse-transcription PCR-confirmed cases with different ZIKV, DENV and WNV infections.

Efficient nonparametric belief propagation for pose estimation and manipulation of articulated objects.

Robots working in human environments often encounter a wide range of articulated objects, such as tools, cabinets, and other jointed objects. Such articulated objects can take an infinite number of possible poses, as a point in a potentially high-dimensional continuous space. A robot must perceive this continuous pose to manipulate the object to a desired pose.

Minimally Invasive Tendon Release for Symptomatic Accessory Soleus Muscle in an Athlete: A Case Report.

The accessory soleus muscle can pose a diagnostic dilemma for exertional ankle pain, especially in athletes. Once diagnosed, the current treatment options require an extensile approach and can be associated with substantial risk and a slow recovery. We describe a minimally invasive, safe method that has proved successful in our practice.

Ethnic Minority Status, Age-at-Immigration and Psychosis Risk in Rural Environments: Evidence From the SEPEA Study.

Objective: Several ethnic minority groups experience elevated rates of first-episode psychosis (FEP), but most studies have been conducted in urban settings. We investigated whether incidence varied by ethnicity, generation status, and age-at-immigration in a diverse, mixed rural, and urban setting.

Method: We identified 687 people, 16-35 years, with an ICD-10 diagnosis of FEP, presenting to Early Intervention Psychosis services in the East of England over 2 million person-years.

Police liaison and section 136: comparison of two different approaches.

Two police liaison and section 136 schemes were developed alongside police services at different sites within the same NHS trust. In one, a mental health nurse worked with frontline police attending incidents related to mental health. The other involved nurses providing advice from the police control room.

A Pilot Dental Survey on Maui.

Routine dental screening surveys of third graders have proven to be a useful tool to monitor the dental health of a community, especially those of highest risk. In 2010 the PEW Charitable Trust (PEW) conducted state-by-state oral hygiene assessments, giving Hawai'i a poor grade, with routine dental surveys of children one of several criteria not met. The Maui Oral Health Task Force piloted its own survey for the island of Maui to assess the challenges in implementing a dental screening and to gain an understanding as to how obstacles might be addressed.

The Epidemiology of First-Episode Psychosis in Early Intervention in Psychosis Services: Findings From the Social Epidemiology of Psychoses in East Anglia [SEPEA] Study.

Objective: Few studies have characterized the epidemiology of first-episode psychoses in rural or urban settings since the introduction of early intervention psychosis services. To address this, the authors conducted a naturalistic cohort study in England, where such services are well established.

Method: All new first-episode psychosis cases, 16-35 years old, presenting to early intervention psychosis services in the East of England were identified during 2 million person-years follow-up.

Estimation of human core temperature from sequential heart rate observations.

Core temperature (CT) in combination with heart rate (HR) can be a good indicator of impending heat exhaustion for occupations involving exposure to heat, heavy workloads, and wearing protective clothing. However, continuously measuring CT in an ambulatory environment is difficult. To address this problem we developed a model to estimate the time course of CT using a series of HR measurements as a leading indicator using a Kalman filter.

Dynamical simulation priors for human motion tracking.

We propose a simulation-based dynamical motion prior for tracking human motion from video in presence of physical ground-person interactions. Most tracking approaches to date have focused on efficient inference algorithms and/or learning of prior kinematic motion models; however, few can explicitly account for the physical plausibility of recovered motion. Here, we aim to recover physically plausible motion of a single articulated human subject.

Human thermoregulatory system state estimation using non-invasive physiological sensors.

Small teams of emergency workers/military can often find themselves engaged in critical, high exertion work conducted under challenging environmental conditions. These types of conditions present thermal work strain challenges which unmitigated can lead to collapse (heat exhaustion) or even death from heat stroke. Physiological measurement of these teams provides a mechanism that could be an effective tool in preventing thermal injury.

Interactions between causal models, theories, and social cognitive development.

We propose a model of social cognitive development based not on a single modeling framework or the hypothesis that a single model accounts for children's developing social cognition. Rather, we advocate a Causal Model approach (cf. Waldmann, 1996), in which models of social cognitive development take the same position as theories of social cognitive development, in that they generate novel empirical hypotheses.

2D subspaces for sparse control of high-DOF robots.

We investigate the use of five dimension reduction and manifold learning techniques to estimate a 2D subspace of hand poses for the purpose of generating motion. Our aim is to uncover a 2D parameterization from optical motion capture data that allows for transformation sparse user input trajectories into desired hand movements. The use of shape descriptors for representing hand pose is additionally explored for dealing with occluded parts of the hand during data collection.

Seasonal changes in VO2max among Division 1A collegiate women soccer players.

Aerobic capacity and body composition were measured at 3 time points over a 1-year period in 26 Division 1A women soccer players from Texas A&M University, in order to determine whether there were seasonal changes in these parameters. Subjects were tested in December, immediately following a 4-month competitive season; in April, following 15 weeks of strength and conditioning; and immediately prior to the start of the regular season in August, following a 12-week summer strength and conditioning program. A periodized strength and conditioning program design was incorporated in order to optimize anaerobic and oxidative capacity immediately prior to the regular competitive season.

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a condition characterized by low levels of immunoglobulin (Ig) G and either IgA or IgM in the presence of recurrent infections. This disorder is associated with an increased risk of malignancy. Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a recently recognized form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that is not often present in the head.
