Making a Case for Faculty Advisor-Advisee Concordant Pairs.

The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education Standards require schools and colleges of pharmacy to provide the needed resources for student success, including student advising. The faculty advisor's role in schools and colleges of pharmacy can be varied and may include modeling professional behavior, serving as students' advocate, and providing academic and professional guidance. This is especially important upon students entering pharmacy school when the risk of being overwhelmed has been documented.

Relationship between residency placement and clerkship site enrollment: a retrospective analysis.

Context: Osteopathic medical students frequently engage in clinical clerkships away from their home teaching institution, which can help them decide on a residency program, gain additional experience in a new environment, and further their professional contacts. Conventional wisdom states that these audition clerkships are an important factor in residency placement, but the educational literature concerning the topic is lacking.

Objective: To determine the relationship between clerkship site enrollment and residency placement so that empirical guidelines can be established for osteopathic medical students in the process of making informed decisions about their clerkships, particularly during the fourth year.

A comparison of healthy human and swine articular cartilage dynamic indentation mechanics.

Articular cartilage is a multicomponent, poroviscoelastic tissue with nonlinear mechanical properties vital to its function. A consequent goal of repair or replacement of injured cartilage is to achieve mechanical properties in the repair tissue similar to healthy native cartilage. Since fresh healthy human articular cartilage (HC) is not readily available, we tested whether swine cartilage (SC) could serve as a suitable substitute for mechanical comparisons.

Tumor incidence in related hematopoietic stem cell donors.

Late malignancies have been discussed as a potential risk for growth factor mobilized donors of hematopoietic stem cells. Little is known about the incidence and potential risk factors. This single center retrospective cohort study evaluated all HLA-identical sibling pairs with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for a hematological malignancy, treated from 1974 to 2001 at the University Hospital of Basel.

Social-ecological assessment of environments: toward a two-factor model.

A study was conducted to test the usefulness of the two-factor model in assessing social environments. Subjects were residents and staff at a residential treatment center for emotionally disturbed and/or delinquent boys and girls. Rating instruments consisted of (a) two parallel versions of Moos' Community-Oriented Programs Enivronment Scale (COPES), each worded so as to be appropriate to the setting being measured, and (b) global ratings of satisfaction with the environment.

Cross-situational consistency among problem adolescents: an application of the two-factor model.

A study was conducted to measure cross-situational consistency of the orthogonal dimensions of the two-factor model of social-emotional functioning. According to this model, large proportions of variance in social-emotional functioning can be accounted for by two orthogonal, highly replicable dimensions. The setting was Hawthorne-Cedar Knolls, a long-term institution for emotionally disturbed and delinquent youths; the subjects were 206 residents of varied ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
