Purpose: The primary aim of this retrospective study is to compare the short and medium-term outcomes for shoulder hydrodilatation for treatment of shoulder AC between diabetic and non-diabetic patients, to evaluate if there were better outcomes amongst non-diabetic patients.

Methods: Patients with clinical or radiological diagnosis of AC and who underwent fluoroscopic guided shoulder hydrodilatation in our local institution from January 2021 to June 2022 were included in this study. Clinical outcomes were measured with visual analog scale (VAS) for pain and passive range of motion consisting of forward flexion (FF) and external rotation (ER) at pre-hydrodilatation, one month and six months post hydrodilatation.

Background: The usage of 3D sawbone models and shadow-play is a novel teaching method in orthopedic education. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of 3D sawbone models and shadow-play in improving medical student orthopedic knowledge and interpretation of plain radiographs.

Methods: Ninety-three medical students with no prior clinical orthopaedic experience were recruited into 2 groups: Group 1 underwent conventional education methods and Group 2 underwent a sawbone and shadow-play education.

Unlabelled: This report describes a rare case in which double calcifications of the acetabular labrum and rectus femoris occurred concomitantly in a middle-aged female patient who was treated successfully with surgical intervention via hip arthroscopy.

Contribution: This case highlights the existence of various types of calcifications around the acetabulum, with a proposed new classification system for acetabular and periacetabular rim ossifications.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare delivery. We hypothesized that children with neurodevelopmental problems would have reduced healthcare utilization during the pandemic compared to before the pandemic.

Methods: We conducted a population-based study of healthcare visits for new neurodevelopmental problems among children ages 0-6 years in Ontario, Canada.

Introduction: Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration (SIRVA) is a group of pathologies defined by pain and stiffness after intramuscular administration of vaccine to the upper arm and has been reported after COVID-19 vaccination. We aim to discuss its pathophysiology, clinical presentation, treatment and outcomes.

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively identified patients presenting with adhesive capsulitis within four weeks of administration of COVID-19 vaccine to the affected arm at our tertiary institution from March 2021 to December 2022.

Background: Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NHb) results from increased total serum bilirubin and is a common reason for admission and readmission amongst newborn infants born in North America. The use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy for treating NHb has been widely debated, and the current incidence of NHb and its therapies remain unknown.

Methods: Using national and provincial databases, a population-based retrospective cohort study of infants born in Ontario from April 2014 to March 2018 was conducted.

Introduction: The Segond fracture is an avulsion fracture of the lateral tibial plateau and is widely considered to be pathognomonic of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture. In addition to ACL rupture, Segond fractures have also been noted to be associated with significant intra-articular pathology such as meniscal injuries as well as extra-articular pathology such as collateral ligament injuries. This is likely due to the fact that the presence of a Segond fracture may represent increased rotatory instability.

Article Synopsis
  • The spread of infectious pulmonary tuberculosis from healthcare workers to patients in healthcare settings, particularly neonatal intensive care units, poses a significant risk.
  • A new protocol for managing neonates exposed to tuberculosis is proposed, involving skin testing, chest X-rays, and preventive treatment with isoniazid.
  • This study is notable as it is the first in Canada to outline a specific approach for monitoring and caring for neonates after potential tuberculosis exposure in NICUs.

Background: Extremely preterm infants are prone to hyperbilirubinemia and its sequelae. Currently recommended thresholds for initiating phototherapy in these newborns are consensus-based (CB).

Methods: A multi-site retrospective cohort study of 642 infants born at 24 to 28 weeks' gestation, between January 2013 and June 2017, was conducted at three NICUs in Canada.

Background: Intramedullary devices for the fixation of intertrochanteric fractures are increasing in usage and popularity. This reflects either a shift in adoption of new technology or intertrochanteric fractures becoming more complex or unstable. This trend was observed in our institution, hence we set out to investigate if this was concordant with an associated change in the demographics of the patients or in the morphology of the intertrochanteric fracture pattern over a 10-year period.

Introduction: As preterm infants are susceptible to hyperbilirubinemia, they require frequent close monitoring. Prior to initiation of phototherapy, hour-specific total serum bilirubin (TSB) percentile cut-points are lacking in these infants, which led to the current study.

Methods: A multi-site retrospective cohort study of preterm infants born between January 2013 and June 2017 was completed at 3 NICUs in Ontario, Canada.

Introduction: Transcutaneous bilirubin (TcB) measurement offers a noninvasive approach for bilirubin screening; however, its accuracy in preterm infants is unclear. This study determined the agreement between TcB and total serum bilirubin (TSB) among preterm infants.

Methods: A multisite prospective cohort study was conducted at 3 NICUs in Ontario, Canada, September 2016 to June 2018.

Background: Recent paediatric and family medicine graduates report feeling unprepared to identify and address children and youth with developmental disorders. Developmental history taking and physical examination alone limit engagement with children and youth in an interactive manner to assess development. The paediatric developmental toolkit (PDT) was developed to provide trainees with the opportunity to interact with a child in a play-based manner.

Several studies have previously been undertaken to investigate the prevalence of radiologic hand osteoarthritis (OA) in Caucasian, Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic populations. To date, there has been no direct international comparison study on the prevalence of radiologic hand OA between a Western and a Southeast Asian population. We hypothesize that there is difference in the pattern of joint involvement among individuals of both populations.

Background: Approximately 20% of children in Canada and the United States are raised in bilingual family homes. Current recommendations for typically developing children are to encourage and support bilingual exposure in the home; however, there are no specific guidelines for families of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), a disorder in which communication deficits are considered a hallmark feature.

Objective: The aim of this study is to present a scoping review of studies that compare cognitive, linguistic, and behavioral outcomes for children with ASDs raised in monolingual vs bilingual homes.
