Massive Silicone-Induced Orbital Granuloma.

We report a large subconjunctival-orbital granuloma in a 51-year-old male presenting with a blind painful right eye and marked chemosis 15 months after undergoing vitrectomy and silicone oil retinal tamponade for retinal detachment with no reported intraoperative complications. Gross and histopathologic examination of the enucleated eye and episcleral tumor revealed a bosselated mass measuring 17 × 10 × 5 mm containing prominent vacuoles with surrounding epithelioid histiocytes and foreign body multinucleated giant cells. Such a large silicone-induced orbital granuloma following uncomplicated retinal surgery in a grossly intact eye has not been previously reported to the authors' knowledge.

The efficacy of a novel mobile phone application for goldmann ptosis visual field interpretation.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of a novel mobile phone application that calculates superior visual field defects on Goldmann visual field charts.

Methods: Experimental study in which the mobile phone application and 14 oculoplastic surgeons interpreted the superior visual field defect in 10 Goldmann charts. Percent error of the mobile phone application and the oculoplastic surgeons' estimates were calculated compared with computer software computation of the actual defects.

Repair of eyelid retraction due to a trabeculectomy bleb: case series and review of the literature.

Superior limbal trabeculectomy remains a common surgical treatment for glaucoma. Positional effects on the overlying upper eyelid-both ptosis and retraction-have been associated with the procedure. More than 1 mechanism may explain retraction; however, the eyelid may elevate mechanically due to the underlying raised superior bulbar conjunctiva.

The efficacy of a midfacial seal drape in reducing oculofacial surgical field fire risk.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of a midface seal drape in eliminating fire risk oxygen concentrations from nasal cannulated oxygen delivery compared with a standard open oculofacial surgical field.

Methods: Controlled experiment using the SimMan patient simulator and an oxygen detector. Oxygen concentrations were measured at 9 facial surgical locations with nasal cannula flow rates of 2, 4, and 6 l/min of 100% FiO2 in both the draped and undraped conditions.

A positive sentinel lymph node in periocular invasive squamous cell carcinoma: a case series.

Evaluation of the canalicular entrance into the lacrimal sac: an anatomical study.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of a common canalicular entrance in the lacrimal sac and to investigate the anatomy of the canalicular/lacrimal sac junction with direct visualization using a novel cadaveric dissection technique.

Methods: Preserved cadavers were dissected to allow direct visualization of the canalicular entrance(s) to the lumen of the lacrimal sac. The prevalence of a common canaliculus and the anatomical variations of the canalicular/lacrimal sac mucosal fold of tissue were recorded.

Orbital fractures: a review.

THIS REVIEW OF ORBITAL FRACTURES HAS THREE GOALS: 1) to understand the clinically relevant orbital anatomy with regard to periorbital trauma and orbital fractures, 2) to explain how to assess and examine a patient after periorbital trauma, and 3) to understand the medical and surgical management of orbital fractures. The article aims to summarize the evaluation and management of commonly encountered orbital fractures from the ophthalmologic perspective and to provide an overview for all practicing ophthalmologists and ophthalmologists in training.

Oculocardiac reflex associated with a large orbital floor fracture.

A 40-year-old man presented with bradycardia, left eye pain, and intermittent nausea 1 day after blunt trauma to the left orbit. Imaging revealed a large orbital floor fracture with significant herniation of orbital contents but no obvious extraocualar muscle entrapment. Oculocardiac reflex was suspected, and the fracture was repaired surgically within 24 hours of presentation.
