Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health problem, and the risk of CKD and hypertension in children born low birth weight (LBW) is under-recognized. We hypothesized that children born with LBW would have a higher prevalence of reduced kidney function and hypertension.

Background: For the developing kidney, the prenatal period may represent a critical window of vulnerability to environmental insults resulting in permanent nephron loss. Tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN) is a cause of acute kidney injury in children characterized histologically by an inflammatory cell infiltrate in the kidney interstitium. The most common causes of TIN in children include medications, infections, inflammatory disorders, and genetic conditions. The American Heart Association defines mood disorders (MDO) as a tier-II cardiovascular disease risk factor in children. Cross-sectional analysis of overweight/obese children referred to an obesity hypertension clinic revealed 37% had a MDO (defined by clinical diagnosis or Patient Health Questionnaire-9/-A score ≥10), 55% had confirmed hypertension, and 75% left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH).
