Shoulder glenohumeral joint dislocations and subluxations are a relatively common injury among athletic populations. Evaluating the patient both on the field initially and through early recovery helps to determine the best treatment strategies and predict the natural history of each unique injury.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOsteochondritis dissecans of the elbow is a rare but debilitating pathology typically found in the adolescent repetitive overhead athlete. In the setting of unstable lesions, mechanical symptoms, or deteriorating function despite appropriate conservative management, surgical osteochondral allograft transplantation of the capitellum is a viable option for even large lesions (>10 mm), with minimal morbidity and good return of function. We describe a technique for performing a large osteochondral allograft transplantation of the capitellum.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFPurpose: To use Google trends to explore differences in public interest among types of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) autografts, specifically quadriceps tendon, patellar tendon, and hamstring tendon autografts, between 2008 and 2019.
Methods: Data were obtained by querying Google Trends for key terms and phrases for online search data ranging from January 2008 to December 2019. Relative search volumes were created based on searches related to ACL reconstruction with comparative analysis generated for search terms related to quadriceps ACL, patellar tendon ACL, and hamstring ACL autografts.
Case: Capitate avascular necrosis should be entertained in a differential diagnosis of young, active adults with midcarpal wrist pain. We present a case study of a 30-year-old laborer who developed avascular necrosis (AVN) of his right proximal capitate. Grip strength and wrist motion were limited on examination, with advanced imaging confirming AVN.

Despite being relatively uncommon (reported in approximately 10% of instability cases), the incidence of posterior labral tear is increasingly recognized as underestimated in highly active populations. Posterior labral tears can result from a traumatic posterior dislocation or repetitive microtrauma, leading to posterior chondral/labral attrition.

Methods: Google Trends data were queried for online search data ranging from January 2011 to December 2020. Various combinations of terms related to PRP and shoulder pathology were queried.
Anatomical total shoulder arthroplasty in its modern form where it reproduces the normal shoulder has been utilized clinically for more than half a century. As the technology and the designs have changed to recreate the humeral and glenoid sides of the joint, the sophistication of design has resulted in the growing number of cases annually worldwide. This increase is due in part to the increasing number of indications that the prosthesis can treat with successful results.

Methods: We retrospectively investigated consecutive DAA THAs performed by a single surgeon. These cases were grouped into patients with and without a history of previous ipsilateral hip arthroscopy.
Purpose: To investigate the characteristics of shoulder and elbow fellowship directors (FDs).
Methods: FDs for shoulder and elbow fellowship programs in the United States were identified. Demographic, educational, and professional background data were collected from available curricula vitarum, institutional biographies, and the Scopus database.
Purpose: To compare the 5-year clinical and functional outcomes of the soft-tissue quadriceps tendon (QT) with those of the hamstring tendon (HT) autograft.
Methods: A retrospective review of patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction using either soft-tissue QT or double-tendon HT autograft with at least 5 years of follow-up was conducted. Surgical technique included anteromedial portal creation for the femoral tunnel and transtibial technique for the tibia.
Purpose: This study aimed to determine whether an increasing number of preoperative corticosteroid injections is associated with greater radiographic subsidence of the thumb metacarpal at long-term follow-up after abductor pollicis longus suspensionplasty, secondary to steroid-induced pathologic weakening of capsuloligamentous restraints surrounding the thumb carpometacarpophalangeal joint and greater extension of the lunate, but neither affect patient-reported outcomes nor revision rates.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed of patients who underwent primary trapeziectomy and abductor pollicis longus suspensionplasty by a single surgeon over a 10-year period. The number of preoperative corticosteroid injections in the trapeziometacarpal joint was documented, and patients were separated into 4 subgroups: 0, 1, 2, or 3 or more injections.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to determine the objective characteristics of orthopaedic musculoskeletal oncology fellowship directors (FDs) by concentrating on the demographics, academic background, institutional history, research experience, and professional affiliations of these leaders.
Methods: Data were collected for each FD through institutional biographies or publicly available curriculum vitae. The data collected for each FD included demographic, professional, and research information.

Unlabelled: Recent literature has suggested that capsular closure following hip arthroscopy restores native hip-joint kinematics and may lead to better patient-reported outcomes, especially in high-level athletes.
Description: Capsular closure of the hip occurs following standard hip arthroscopy, which typically includes labral repair and osteoplasty of the femoral neck and/or acetabulum accessed through an interportal capsulotomy. Viewing through an anterolateral portal with use of a 70° scope, a suture-passing device loaded with a #2 FiberWire (Arthrex) is passed down into the mid-anterior portal.
Background: Over the last decade, cementless total knee arthroplasty has demonstrated improved outcomes and survivorship due to advances in technologies of implant design, manufacturing capabilities, and biomaterials. Due to increasing interest in cementless implant design for TKA, our aim was to perform a systematic review of the literature to evaluate the clinical outcomes and revision rates of the Triathlon Total Knee system over the past decade.
Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted following PRISMA guidelines for patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty with cementless Triathalon Total Knee System implants.
Recurrent instability associated with glenoid bone loss is a commonly encountered problem after anterior shoulder dislocation. Surgical management with bony augmentation can be achieved with several allograft or autograft options. Fixation strategies also vary, including screw, suture button, or suture anchor fixation.

Purpose: To use the National Collegiate Athletic Association Injury Surveillance Program (NCAA-ISP) from the 2009-2010 through the 2014-2015 seasons to report lumbar spine injury rates, characteristics, and time lost from sport in soccer players.
Methods: Characteristics of lumbar spine injuries by season, competition/practice, and time lost from sport were determined using the NCAA-ISP database. Rates of injury were calculated as the number of injuries divided by the number of athlete exposures (AEs).
