Hand dermatitis in auto mechanics and machinists.

Background: Auto mechanics and machinists presenting with suspected allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) have traditionally been patch-tested with a standard screening tray and a specialty tray such as the Oil and Cooling Fluid Series. While this has proven useful for patch-testing the machinist, there is a need for the development of a more specific allergen testing tray for the auto mechanic.

Objective: The objective of the study was to compare clinical features and patch-test results of auto mechanics and machinists with hand dermatitis to evaluate differences in allergen profiles.

Cross-reactions to desoximetasone and mometasone furoate in a patient with multiple topical corticosteroid allergies.

A 60-year-old man developed a bullous contact dermatitis after topical corticosteroid treatment of dermatitis on his lower leg. Subsequent patch testing showed cross-reactions to numerous group B and group D corticosteroids as well as cross-reactions to group C desoximetasone and group D1 mometasone furoate. His patch-test result was negative for the group A corticosteroids hydrocortisone and tixocortol pivalate.

Refractory erosive oral lichen planus associated with hepatitis C: response to topical tacrolimus ointment.

Background: Erosive lichen planus is a painful and disabling disease that is frequently resistant to topical and systemic therapies. Current therapies are considered palliative rather than curative as many patients relapse after discontinuing treatment. An association has been reported between some cases of oral lichen planus (OLP) and chronic hepatitis C infection.

Evaluation of sun-protective practices of organ transplant recipients.

The incidence, morbidity and mortality of skin cancer are markedly increased in organ transplant recipients. Efforts aimed at reducing sun exposure through sun avoidance, sunscreens and sun-protective clothing are the most effective means to reduce the risk of skin cancer. We evaluated the sun-protective behaviors of 205 transplant recipients.

Non-malignant and tumor-derived cells differ in their requirement for p27Kip1 in transforming growth factor-beta-mediated G1 arrest.

Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) induces G(1) arrest in susceptible cells by multiple mechanisms that inhibit the G(1) cyclin-dependent kinases (Cdks), including Cdk2, Cdk4, and Cdk6. TGF-beta treatment of early passage finite lifespan human mammary epithelial cells (HMECs) led to an accumulation of p27(Kip1) in cyclin E1-Cdk2 complexes and kinase inhibition. The requirement for p27 in the G(1) arrest by TGF-beta was assessed by transfection of antisense p27 (ASp27) oligonucleotides into TGF-beta-treated HMECs.
