Objective: Entrustable professional activities (EPAs) have been developed to refine competency-based education. The American Board of Surgery has initiated a 2-year pilot study to evaluate the impact of EPAs on the evaluation and feedback of surgical residents. The ACGME Milestones in Surgery is a semiannual competency-based evaluation program to measure resident progression through 16 professional attributes across 8 practice domains.

Early and late onset Clostridium difficile-associated colitis following liver transplantation.

Clostridium difficile colitis (CDC) remains a serious and common complication after liver transplantation (LT). Four hundred and sixty-seven consecutive LTs in 402 individuals were performed between 1998 and 2001 at our center. Standard immunosuppression consisted of tacrolimus, mycophenolate, and steroids.

Incidental appendectomy: 18-year pathologic survey and cost effectiveness in the nonmanaged-care setting.

Background: Incidental appendectomy (IA) remains a controversial issue. The role of IA in the nonmanaged-care setting has not been evaluated recently. This study evaluates the cost-benefit of IA based on current third-party reimbursements and reports the incidence of pathology from routine IA during an 18-year period.

MRSA-related perianal abscesses: an underrecognized disease entity.

Purpose: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in perianal abscesses represents an underrecognized condition. It is unclear whether these abscesses differ in presentation or other characteristics from their non-MRSA counterparts.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with perianal abscess, who underwent incision and drainage between January 2003 and September 2005, were identified retrospectively.

Malignancies of the colorectum and anus in solid organ recipients.

Patients undergoing solid organ transplantation (SOT) are at increased risk for developing malignancies due to the long term immunosuppression. Data on malignancies of the large intestine after various types of SOT are rare. A total of 3595 SOTs were performed between 1986 and 2005 at our center and retrospectively analyzed with regard to the incidence and course of malignancies of the colon, rectum, and anus.
