Purpose: Transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) is the initial staging procedure for new bladder cancers (BCs). For muscle-invasive bladder cancers (MIBCs), TURBT may delay definitive treatment. We investigated whether definitive treatment can be expedited for MIBC using flexible cystoscopic biopsy and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) for initial staging.

Background: Transurethral resection of bladder tumour has been the mainstay of bladder cancer staging for > 60 years. Staging inaccuracies are commonplace, leading to delayed treatment of muscle-invasive bladder cancer. Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging offers rapid, accurate and non-invasive staging of muscle-invasive bladder cancer, potentially reducing delays to radical treatment.

Sneathia vaginalis is a Gram-negative vaginal species that is associated with pregnancy complications. It produces cytopathogenic toxin A (CptA), a pore-forming toxin. To determine whether CptA is expressed in vivo and to examine the mucosal Ab response to the toxin, we examined human midvaginal swab samples obtained during pregnancy for IgM, IgA, and IgG Abs with CptA affinity.

Background: An increasing number of dietitians use non-diet approaches, referred to as non-weight focused practice approaches (NWFAs), in clinical practice when working with higher weight adult clients. However, the factors that impact dietitians' ability to successfully implement these approaches in practice are unknown.

Methods: Aiming to examine how implementing NWFAs in clinical practice differs based on the extent to which a dietitian uses NWFAs with their clients, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey among Canadian registered dietitians who work with higher weight adults (May to July 2021), developed and validated following the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research.

Objectives: Comparison of national midwife workforce data from the National Provider Identifier file determined it undercounted midwives compared to national data available from the American Midwifery Certification Board. This undercount may be due to the existence of three taxonomy categories for midwives when registering for the National Provider Identifier. The objective of this study was to obtain an accurate count of advanced practice midwives using the National Provider Identifier Data.

The association between Sneathia vaginalis and preterm birth is emerging. The Gram-negative anaerobe produces a large exotoxin, the cytopathogenic toxin A (CptA), that forms pores in human epithelial cells and red blood cells. The structure of the toxin has not been determined, but in silico analysis predicts that a large amino-terminal region of the protein is globular and separated from the carboxy-terminal tandem repeats by a disordered region.

Background: Canadian sodium intakes remain high despite population-wide sodium reduction initiatives, highlighting the need for personal action in reducing dietary sodium. eHealth interventions support patients in dietary change and assist clinicians in decision-making and delivering care, including provision of advice. To date, impact of diet-focused eHealth tools, like the Sodium Calculator (SC) dietary screening tool, on clinical outcomes has received minimal examination.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic continues to be a major global public health issue. Moreover, disparities continue to persist in HIV among racial and ethnic minority populations, with the highest rates of new diagnoses in Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino men who have sex with men in the United States. Pharmacists are one of the most accessible and trusted health care professionals.

Background: Obstetrical triage units function like emergency departments with unpredictable volumes that affect the timely evaluation and treatment of patients and lead to longer wait times, delays in care, and longer length of stay (LOS).

Objective: The aim of this quality improvement initiative was to decrease the length of stay (LOS) of obstetrical triage patients by 20% through the utilization of nurse-driven orders, improved communication, and patient engagement.

Methods: Rapid cycle quality improvement using four plan-do-study-act cycles was utilized.

We use a case of intact cord resuscitation to argue for the beneficial effects of an enhanced blood volume from placental transfusion for newborns needing resuscitation. We propose that intact cord resuscitation supports the process of physiologic neonatal transition, especially for many of those newborns appearing moribund. Transfer of the residual blood in the placenta provides the neonate with valuable access to otherwise lost blood volume while changing from placental respiration to breathing air.

The composition of the human vaginal microbiome has been extensively studied and is known to influence reproductive health. However, the functional roles of individual taxa and their contributions to negative health outcomes have yet to be well characterized. Here, we examine two vaginal bacterial taxa grouped within the genus that have been previously associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV) and pregnancy complications.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the vaginal microbiome differences between reproductive-aged women with overweight/obesity and those of healthy weight.
  • It involved 367 women from each group, matched on age, race, income, and nulliparity, analyzing data from the Vaginal Human Microbiome Study.
  • Results showed that women with overweight/obesity had higher microbial diversity and less dominant Lactobacillus compared to healthy weight women, which could explain varying risks for conditions like preterm birth and bacterial vaginosis.

Bacterial lipases play important roles during infection. The Staphylococcus aureus genome contains several genes that encode well-characterized lipases and several genes predicted to encode lipases or esterases for which the function has not yet been established. In this study, we sought to define the function of an uncharacterized S.

The diversity and dominant bacterial taxa in the vagina are reported to be influenced by multiple intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including but not limited to pregnancy, contraceptive use, pathogenic states, socioeconomic status, and ancestry. However, the extent to which host genetic factors influence variation in the vaginal microbiota is unclear. We used a biometrical genetic approach to determine whether host genetic factors contribute to inter-individual differences in taxa from a sample of 332 twins who self-identified as being of African (44 pairs) or European ancestry (122 pairs).

Transurethral resection of bladder tumour (TURBT) is central to the diagnosis of muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC). With the oncological safety of TURBT unknown, staging inaccuracies commonplace, and correct treatment of MIBC potentially delayed, multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) may offer rapid, accurate, and noninvasive diagnosis of MIBC. BladderPath is a randomised trial comparing risk-stratified (5-point Likert scale) image-directed care with TURBT for patients with newly diagnosed BC.
