Fifteen species of sea anemones (Cnidaria, Actiniaria) have been recorded so far in the Colombian Caribbean, comprising approximately 28% of the total number of known species in the Caribbean Sea. Most species recorded are associated with coral reef communities. However, in the region, no records of sea anemones are known from areas with high sedimentation conditions as is characteristic along the coastline of the Atlántico Department, in Colombia.

The Puerto Velero Marina, located on the central Caribbean coast of Colombia, is an example of an artificial structure that serves as a substrate for a vulnerable community such as cnidarians (Hydrozoa and Anthozoa). This study provides the first assessment of corals and other cnidarians inhabiting artificial marine habitats in a marginal environment of the Caribbean of Colombia. The Puerto Velero Marina was built into a 7 km sand spit generated by sedimentation at the mouth of the Magdalena River.
