Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the relationship between telogen effluvium (TE), COVID-19, and COVID-19 vaccinations in patients at dermatology clinics in South Korea.
  • - Results showed a significant increase in TE cases after the COVID-19 pandemic, while vaccination appeared to have no impact on TE occurrence.
  • - The findings suggest a correlation between the pandemic and TE, but the retrospective design limits the ability to determine causation.

  • The study aimed to establish clear criteria for classifying the severity of alopecia areata (AA), as no universal guidelines existed prior to this research.! -
  • A consensus was reached among experts, resulting in a severity classification system that uses the severity of alopecia tool (SALT) and categorizes AA as mild, moderate, or severe based on specific thresholds.! -
  • The new criteria will assist clinicians in diagnosing AA more accurately, determining suitable treatments, and effectively monitoring the condition's progression.!

The underwater soundscape was recorded in Seaview Bay off Inexpressible Island, Ross Sea region Marine protected area, for 3 days in December 2021. Leopard seal vocalizations were a prominent sound source that led to variations in ambient sound pressure levels in a frequency range of approximately 150-4500 Hz. Among the 14 call types previously identified, except ultrasound vocalizations, six types of broadcast calls were classified, and their acoustic characteristics were analyzed.

Alopecia areata (AA) is a clinically heterogeneous, immune-mediated, non-scarring hair loss disorder. This real-world chart review sought to characterize treatment patterns and healthcare resource use among patients with severe AA in South Korea. A web-based chart review of 40 dermatologists was conducted in which the medical charts of 151 adult patients diagnosed with severe AA between May 2019 and April 2021 were reviewed.

Article Synopsis
  • Actinic keratoses (AKs) are UV-induced skin patches that raise the likelihood of developing non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and this study focuses on their incidence and risk in Korea.
  • A large cohort study involving nearly 3,000 AK patients showed an NMSC risk that is significantly higher (adjusted hazard ratio of 8.91) in those with AK compared to controls, especially among women, individuals under 60, and lower-income patients.
  • Over a 16-year period, the cumulative incidence of NMSC was 4.19% in AK patients, underscoring the importance of enhanced monitoring and treatment for this group in Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • - Primary cutaneous malignancies are a prevalent type of cancer globally, with a substantial analysis conducted on the Korean population using data from the Nationwide Cancer Registry between 1999 and 2019, revealing a 7-fold increase in diagnosed cases.
  • - Significant increases were observed in age-standardized incidence rates for various skin cancers, with basal cell carcinoma rising 3.4-fold and malignant melanoma increasing 1.8-fold, showcasing diverse rates among different types of skin cancer.
  • - The study indicated high 5-year relative survival rates for basal cell carcinoma (103.3%), while angiosarcoma had the lowest rate (24.7%), highlighting improvements in survival across many skin cancer types, though these improvements differed by

In pediatric patients, nail unit anesthesia is frequently required for procedures including matrixectomy or nail avulsion. However, nail unit anesthesia is very painful and requires a significant amount of time to take complete effect, causing a great deal of distress for most pediatric patients. By targeting the palmar and dorsal digital nerves in the distal part of the fingers, our method enables fast, simple, and less painful anesthesia.

Article Synopsis
  • Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) is mainly found in Asians and is a rare but aggressive subtype of melanoma, prompting research into distinguishing it from benign acral nevi (ABN) using immunohistochemical (IHC) markers.
  • In a study involving 53 ALM and 19 ABN specimens, key IHC markers like PRAME and Ki-67 showed significantly higher expression in ALM, while p16 levels were lower in ALM, highlighting potential markers for diagnosis.
  • The findings suggest that PRAME is the most promising marker for identifying ALM, although additional large-scale studies are necessary to confirm these results.

  • Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and aggressive skin cancer that has mostly been studied in Caucasians, leaving a knowledge gap about its characteristics and prognosis in Asian populations, particularly in South Korea.
  • This research, a nationwide study conducted across 12 centers, evaluated 161 patients with MCC, revealing a higher incidence in females and highlighting that the disease stage at diagnosis significantly influences overall survival rates.
  • The findings indicate that MCC exhibits unique clinicopathological features in South Korea, emphasizing the importance of understanding geographical variations in cancer epidemiology.

Leishmaniasis is a neglected tropical disease and an infectious disease transmitted by sandflies that occurs worldwide. In the absence of physicians seeking to identify the causes of disease in non-endemic areas, appropriate diagnoses cannot be made, thereby hampering effective treatment. In this report, we examined a nodular lesion on a patient's chin by performing a biopsy and molecular analysis.

General anaesthesia could affect various immune responses, including Th1 and Th2 immunity, which might also affect cells that play an important role in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis. However, the relationship between general anaesthesia exposure and atopic dermatitis remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of developing atopic dermatitis after first exposure to general anaesthesia in the paediatric population (18 years or under).

This randomized, double-blind, and sham device-controlled trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of home-based photobiomodulation therapy using an 830-nm light-emitting diode (LED)-based device for the prevention of and pain relief from thyroidectomy scars. Participants were randomized to receive photobiomodulation therapy using an LED device or a sham device without an LED from 1 week postoperatively for 4 weeks. Scars were assessed using satisfaction scores, the numeric rating scale (NRS) score for pain, Global Assessment Scale (GAS), and Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS) scores.
