Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) are localized, rupture-prone expansions of the abdominal aorta wall. In this condition, structural extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins of the aorta wall, elastic fibers and collagen fibers, that impart elasticity and stiffness respectively, are slowly degraded by overexpressed matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) following an injury stimulus. We are seeking to deliver therapeutics to the AAA wall using polymer nanoparticles (NPs) that are capable of stimulating on-site matrix regeneration and repair.

An understudied strategy for inactivation is purposeful oocyst excystation, as sporozoites do not survive long in the environment. This study showed that C.

This study examines the entry modes of (GT) DNA-wrapped single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) into NPCs.

The current Environmental Protection Agency-approved method for oocyst detection and quantification is expensive, limiting the ability of water utilities to monitor complex watersheds thoroughly to understand the fate and transport of C. parvum oocysts.

The motors consume chemical energies to generate stresses and reorganize the cytoskeleton for the cell to move and divide. However, since there has been a lack of direct measurements characterizing intracellular stresses, questions remained unanswered on the intricacies of how cells use such stresses to regulate their internal mechanical integrity in different microenvironments.

Prior research has shown that environmental biofilms immobilize oocysts from the water column, but the biophysical mechanisms driving this attraction are still under investigation. This study investigates the affinity of oocysts to silanized surfaces.

However, limited studies are performed that examine the influence that nanomaterials may have on cell behavior over long time scales at nonlethal concentrations. This study is designed to investigate whether carbon nanotubes are able to augment cell behavior at low concentrations.

This study investigated oocyst deposition onto biofilms as a function of shear stress under laminar or turbulent flow. Annular rotating bioreactors were used to grow stabilized stream biofilms at shear stresses ranging from 0.038 to 0.

Unlabelled: Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts are able to infect a wide range of mammals, including humans, via fecal-oral transmission. The remobilization of biofilm-associated C. parvum oocysts back into the water column by biofilm sloughing or bulk erosion poses a threat to public health and may be responsible for waterborne outbreaks; thus, the investigation of C.

This study aimed to clarify the role of ESG in the adhesion between leukocytes and Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) under resting or inflammatory conditions. Using an atomic force microscopy-based single-cell adhesion assay, we directly quantified the detachment force and work perpendicular to the cell membrane.

However, they are present in only small percentages in human bone marrow, and are generally propagated in vitro prior to downstream use. Previous work has shown that hMSC propagation can lead to alterations in cell behavior and differentiation potency, yet optimization of differentiation based on starting cell elastic modulus is an area still under investigation.

The motor activity and minifilament assembly of non-muscle myosin-II is an important component of cortical cytoskeletal remodeling during mechanosensing. We used experiments and computational modeling to study cortical myosin-II dynamics in adhered cells.

Microfluidics has proven a powerful tool in mechanistic studies of NSC differentiation. However, NSCs are prone to differentiate when the nutrients are limited, which occurs unfavorable by fast medium consumption in miniaturized culture environment.

This often limits the analysis that can be performed on cells that are in contact with these materials. This study outlines a method that will quench these inhibitive optical phenomena on a variety of polymeric materials, including poly(glycerol sebacate), poly(urethane), poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone), and poly(lactic acid-co-glycolic acid).

Traditional techniques for studying neurotransmitter release/uptake require inferences from non-selective electrical recordings, are invasive/destructive, and/or suffer from poor temporal resolution. Recent advances in electrochemical biosensors have enhanced in vitro and in vivo detection of neurotransmitter concentration under physiological/pathophysiological conditions.

Extracellular glutamate and GABA was quantified by 2D gas chromatography and time of flight mass spectrometry after stimulation at varying amplitudes and frequencies. Amplitude sweeps resulted in a linear calibration for P19 neurons; the level of neurotransmitter varied over one order of magnitude from ~ 200 pg/neuron to ~ 1.

Microstimulation of neural tissue has become a widely-used technique for controlling neuronal responses with local electric fields as well as a therapeutic intervention for nervous system disorders such as epilepsy and Parkinson's disease. Of those afflicted by neurological diseases, many are or become tolerant to existing pharmaceuticals and are left with little recourse. Little is known about the necessary design criteria or efficacy of a hybrid neural prosthesis.

This work demonstrates the ability of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to characterize the surface chemistry of peptide modified sol-gel thin films based on the example of four different free peptide-silanes, denoted RGD, NID, KDI ,and YIG. The N 1s and C 1s peaks were found to be good fingerprints of the peptides, whereas O 1s overlapped with the signal of substrate oxygen and, therefore, the O 1s peak was not informative in the case of the thin films.
