Northern Raglai voicing and its relation to Southern Raglai register: evidence for early stages of registrogenesis.

Northern and Southern Raglai are two closely related Austronesian dialects (Chamic branch) spoken in south-central Vietnam. Although they are mutually intelligible, Northern Raglai is described as having a voicing contrast in onset stops, while Southern Raglai is assumed to have replaced the Chamic voicing contrast with a register contrast realized on the whole syllable (but primarily on its vowel). A production study of the two dialects confirms that Northern Raglai preserves a voicing contrast, even if most women exhibit partial devoicing of their voiced stops, and that Southern Raglai has developed a register contrast based on F1 and phonation cues at the beginning of vowels.

Violence prevention in the mental health setting: the New York state experience.

In 1996 the NewYork State Office of Mental Health issued a policy requiring all State-operated psychiatric facilities to develop and implement a proactive violence-prevention program based on guidelines issued by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration. This presented an opportunity to evaluate the impact of the guidelines on worker health and safety. The authors report the findings of a mixed-method study to evaluate the feasibility and impact of a participatory intervention to prevent workplace violence.

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1) is a member of the CEA family of immunoglobulin-like adhesion molecules with two major splice variants, CEACAM1(a)-4L and CEACAM1(b)-4S, differing in the length of their COOH-terminal cytoplasmic tail. Both forms are down-regulated in prostate and liver carcinomas relative to normal tissues. We have previously shown in a nude mouse xenograft model that restoration of CEACAM1(a)-4L expression in human prostate carcinoma cells (PC-3) suppresses tumorigenicity, an effect observed with carcinomas from several other tissues but never established for hepatocellular carcinomas.

Affinity purification and enzymatic cleavage of inter-alpha inhibitor proteins using antibody and elastase immobilized on CIM monolithic disks.

Epoxy-activated monolithic CIM disks seem to be excellent supports for immobilization of protein ligands. The potential use of enzymes, immobilized on monolithic disks for rapid preparative cleavage proteins in solution was investigated. Digestion of complex plasma proteins was demonstrated by using inter-alpha inhibitors with elastase, immobilized on epoxy-activated CIM disks.
