A middle range theory of family vigilance.

Three qualitative studies were conducted to explore the meanings, patterns, and day-to-day experience of family members staying with hospitalized relatives. The data were used to develop a theory of vigilance inductively with implications for further research, and provide a theoretical framework for nursing interventions.

Vigilance: the experience of parents staying at the bedside of hospitalized children.

Although the incorporation of a family-centered model of care delivery and open visitation policies have supported parents at the bedside of hospitalized children, little research has been conducted exploring the daily experience of vigilant parents. The purpose of this qualitative ethnographic study was to explore the experience of vigilance and specifically to examine the meaning, patterns, and day-to-day rhythms of parents who stay at the bedside of their hospitalized children. Ten parents of hospitalized children on a general pediatric unit were purposively selected to participate in the study.

Poetic expressions of vigilance.

In this article, the author explores poetic transcription as an experimental form of writing. Her previous ethnographic research, in which she explored the experience of vigilance for family members who stayed at the bedside of hospitalized relatives, provided the qualitative data for the poetic compositions. In this article, she describes the background and rationale for the research, the findings, and her use of the data to transcribe them into poetic expressions of the lived experience of vigilance.
