Article Synopsis
  • - The parvorder Rhynchopthirina includes three species of lice that infest elephants and certain types of warthogs, with African and Asian elephant lice previously classified as the same species, Haematomyzus elephantis.
  • - A study sequenced 23 mitochondrial genes from African elephant lice to compare with those from Asian elephant lice, finding significant genetic divergence (over 23% overall and about 17% for the cox1 gene), suggesting they are not the same species.
  • - The greater genetic divergence between the African and Asian elephant lice, compared to their host elephants, indicates that these lice have likely evolved separately alongside their respective elephant hosts, leading to the conclusion that they represent distinct cryptic species

Historically, the use of antibiotics was not well regulated in veterinary medicine. The emergence of antibiotic resistance (ABR) in pathogenic bacteria in human and veterinary medicine has driven the need for greater antibiotic stewardship. The preservation of certain antibiotic classes for use exclusively in humans, especially in cases of multidrug resistance, has highlighted the need for veterinarians to reduce its use and redefine dosage regimens of antibiotics to ensure efficacy and guard against the development of ABR pathogens.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study screened DNA samples from various sources, including patients, rodents, cattle, dogs, and ticks, using a quantitative PCR assay to detect certain DNA genes.
  • - High levels of DNA related to a novel organism (labeled as sp. SA dog) were found in dogs, while low levels were identified in rodents and cattle, suggesting potential links to acute febrile illness (AFI) in South Africa.
  • - Phylogenetic analysis indicated that sp. SA dog is distinct enough from other species to be considered a separate species, though formal classification requires additional validation.
