Aprotinin is a small serine protease inhibitor used in human health. Spirodela were transformed, via Agrobacterium, with a synthetic gene encoding the mature aprotinin sequence and a signal peptide for secretion which was driven by the CaMV 35S promoter. A total of 25 transgenic Spirodela lines were generated and aprotinin production was confirmed by northern and western blot analyses.

Plant 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) is part of the biosynthetic pathway leading to plastoquinone and vitamin E. The deduced amino acid sequences of all 10 genes contain the typical cystatin family signature. We show here that in mutant emb8516, the development of mutant embryos deviates as soon as the transition stage from that of wild-type siblings. The basic events of pattern formation take place because mutant embryos display an apical-basal polarity and differentiate a protoderm.
